Around 11 p.m., officers in the Cherry Street area heard gunshots and arrived to find “several parties exchanging gunfire and numerous people fleeing the area,” according to police.

“Two individuals from one group started firing upon the other group,” Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy said in a news conference Sunday. “They believe that there wasn’t one intended target — at least in that other group — and all of the other victims that were shot were unintended.”

Murphy stated that the incident did not appear to be gang-related.

According to police Sgt. Jeremy Eames, a number of gunshot victims were sent to a hospital for treatment. According to him, four of the victims are expected to live, while two are in grave danger. He went on to say that the majority of those killed were teenagers or young adults.

“We had large groups of juveniles walking around the downtown area this date and we believe it’s from within that group that the shooting took place,” he said.

Mayor Tim Kelly of Chattanooga, who was present at the news conference, said he was “experiencing a wide variety of emotions” in the aftermath of the incident. “I’m heartbroken for the victims and families whose lives were turned upside down by shooting last night,” he said.

The mayor also recommended that parents be aware of where their firearms are stored and keep them out of reach of their children.

According to a top Customs and Border Protection official, more than 100 federal police reacted to the shooting, and the head of the Border Patrol’s Del Rio sector told CNN that the crime scene was unsettling. Chief Patrol Agent Jason Owens said, “I took my agents back to the Uvalde sector, and I had to bring new uniforms for them to change them.” Owens said, “Why?” when asked why “He was drenched in blood. This person’s actions were heinous.”

Judge Lalo Diaz said that the bodies of nine victims will be handed to funeral homes on Wednesday, and the remaining 12 bodies will be released on Thursday. The shooter’s body is in another county’s morgue, according to Diaz.

Apparently, Mr. James called in the tip saying he was at a McDonald’s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He said he saw his face on the TV and knew he was wanted by the police. The call was followed by a 911 call from someone who said they saw Frank James.

He is suspected of firing 33 shots while on a crowded N train traveling toward the 36th Street station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood. 10 people were shot and 19 people injured, none of them was life-threatening. The motive is still unknown at the moment.

James was charged in federal court with violating a law that prohibits terrorist and other violent attacks against a mass transportation system. Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York said that if convicted, he could spend life in prison.

Mr. James has a lengthy criminal history according to the New York City Police Department. Also, prior to the shootings, he uploaded videos on YouTube talking about mass shootings and violence.

He has nine prior arrests in the city dating from 1992 to 1998 for offenses including possession of burglary tools, a criminal sex act, and theft of service, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said.

10 people suffered gunshot wounds while 29 others sustained injuries. All of them are currently treated at a nearby hospital. There were no known motives for the shooting at the moment. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, after the man deployed the smoke bombs, it’s estimated that he fired 33 times. They found a Glock handgun, three magazines, two smoke grenades, and a hatchet.

The police also connected a U-haul van key and a credit card on the scene to a possible suspect. They identified Frank James, a 62-year old man with addresses in Wisconsin and Philadelphia.

“We are endeavoring to locate him to determine his connection to the subway shooting, if any,” NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said during a news conference Tuesday. “The two crime scenes, the subway, and the van are very active and are still being processed.”

“Mr. James is just a person of interest we know right now who rented that U-Haul van in Philadelphia,” Essig said. “The keys to that U-Haul van were found in the subway in our shooter’s possessions. We don’t know right now if Mr. James has any connection to the subway. That’s still under investigation.”

Meanwhile, New York City agencies are offering a joint $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect involved in the subway shooting.
