Muttahida Majalis-E-Amal is a combined group of religious and social organizations of Muslims, madarsas, schools, colleges, and other organizations in the Saharanpur district. A press conference was held at a school in Anand Nagar on the 28thof March. The Maulanas called the release of the film Kashmir Files unfortunate and termed it ‘laughable politics’.

Spokesperson Sher Shah Alam said that through the film The Kashmir Files, an attempt is being made to disturb communal harmony under a conspiracy. It is unfortunate that attempts are being made to end the mutual brotherhood. Others addressing the press conference included Maulana Abdul Malik Mukesi who is district president of the Milli Council and Maulana Shahid Mazahiri who is a member of Jamiat Ulama Uttar Pradesh.

Sher Shah Azam said, “This press conference has been held about the film The Kashmir Files. The movie is creating hatred within the country. This film should be banned immediately. The government here says that the reality should come out, then there are so many realities here. What is the use of re-picking up old forgotten memories, making fabricated stories, and leaving them in the midst of the people? People will hate each other and when there is hatred there will be fights, mob lynchings.”

It was further said in the press conference, “In this film, all the historical facts are being twisted. Here they want to impose a particular point of view on people. This is not the way to maintain peace and harmony. We want people inside the country not to be misled and not to hate each other. Rather, adopt the thousands of years old ‘tehzeeb’ that symbolizes mutual brotherhood.”

The Kashmir Files controversies continue as the RJD, CPI(ML) MLAs tear ‘Kashmir Files’ tickets inside Bihar Assembly. CPI(ML) MLA Mehboob Alam said later, “Kashmir Files tickets symbolize hatred as the film vilifies Muslims. We will not allow anyone to vitiate communal harmony in Bihar.” At the same time, the Congress MLAs did not accept the tickets made available by the BJP at the Vidhan Sabha reception. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was present in the House when the tickets were torn.

RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tewari said, “Why does the government not show us films on unemployment and issues of common people’s interest? They want to further their communal agenda by showcasing a film like ‘Kashmir Files.’ We criticize CM Nitish Kumar for falling into the BJP trap.”

BJP spokesperson Santosh Pathak however said, “The film has shown bare facts of Kashmir. RJD, CPI (ML), and Congress do not want to see the truth because these parties have done politics of forming governments, not building the nation. We condemn the behavior of legislators who tore the film tickets in the Assembly. If they wanted to show opposition, they would not have accepted the film tickets.”

The Kashmir Files Controversies – The Director

Meanwhile, a police report has been filed against the director of the Kashmir Files, Vivek Agnihotri. This was due to the remarks he said in an interview that Bhopalis are often assumed to be homosexual.

A 27-year-old PR manager named Rohit Pandey filed the report at Versova police station in Mumbai. The complainant hails from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and has sought the registration of an urgent FIR in the matter.

The Kashmir Files director came under fire for his comment after the clip of the interview went viral. He said in the interview, “I am from Bhopal, but I do not call myself a Bhopali because that carries a certain connotation. If someone calls himself a Bhopali, it generally means that person is a homosexual.. someone with ‘nawabi ‘fantasies.

The Kashmir Files debate continues as the continuous success of the movie creates additional controversy. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s “anti-Hindu” statement.

During the Delhi Assembly, Mr. Kejriwal accused the BJP leaders of “promoting” the movie and asked the makers of the movie to upload the film on YouTube. While BJP countered saying Mr. Kejriwal made several movies in the past tax-free in the national capital but not the Vivek Agnihotri film.

“Arvind Kejriwal has made several movies tax-free in Delhi. I want to ask him why did he not ask to upload all those movies on YouTube? Why do you have interest only in The Kashmir Files being uploaded on YouTube?” he said.

Earlier on Friday, the Assam Chief Minister had accused Mr. Kejriwal of using the Delhi assembly “to rub salt in the wound of Hindus”.

“If you don’t want to make #KashmirFiles tax-free, don’t. But stop this constant mocking of Kashmiri Pandits. Their sufferings are a result of such condescending attitude & appeasement politics of secularists. It doesn’t behave a CM to use the Assembly to rub salt in the wound of Hindus,” Mr. Sarma said.

Anupam Kher

One of the film’s stars Anupam Kher also commented. “After Kejriwal’s statement, I think every true Indian should go and watch this film in the theatre. The only way you can give a resounding response to his insensitivity is by collecting more money and connecting with more people from Kashmir…He was crude, insensitive and he didn’t think about the lakhs of Kashmir Hindus who were thrown out of their own homes, the women raped and people murdered. The people behind him were laughing and it was shameless. That was also happening in the state assembly…If he wants to have a political problem with the Prime Minister or the BJP, he should have just spoken about that. But to bring in Kashmir Files which the people are accepting, feeling guilty, and saying ‘We didn’t know this happened to us’…to say that it is a propaganda film or it is a lie I think it was shameful.”

On the other side, Bollywood A-lister Akshay Kumar praised the movie in his latest tweet.

“The Kashmir Files came like a huge wave in the country that shook all of us. Wo aur baat hai ki meri picture ko bhi dooba diya (It’s a different thing that it has also sabotaged my own film).”

Vivek said, “Thanks Akshay Kumar for your appreciation for #TheKashmirFiles.”

They also said that among the reasons for TKF’s success is its support from the government. Bollywood said there were also other films gathering such support like Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Uri: The Surgical Strike.

In a recent interview with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, he defended director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri. When asked about the certain group of Bollywood that are against TKF. He answered “I have no idea about that. But, every director has a style and point of view for making films. He made a film from his point of view, which is good. Others will also make films from their perspectives, in the future. And, that is great.”

He added, “When a filmmaker makes a film, he/she does so from his perspective, with a unique style of viewing things. It should be allowed for any filmmaker to add their own perspective even to films based on real incidents. I cannot speak any more on this as I have not watched the film.”

Setting a trend is a historic feat but will be very difficult. This is not just in the film industry but in real life as well. There will be some who would like it and those who won’t. The beauty of things is that everyone is entitled to their freedom. It is up to us to believe what is out there, especially in the digital age. The technology or the marketing strategy might be the same but the change begins with us.
