AC Milan CEO Ivan Gazidis believes football needs to fight issues such as domestic abuse. Not just in society, but also within the game itself. “I think football, in many ways, does reflect the issues in society. But it also has the ability to lead thought in a variety of areas and provide better examples.”

Many football fans were shocked to hear Manchester United and England star Mason Greenwood arrested. He is under investigation for sexual and domestic abuse. Manchester United announced his suspension and many sponsors dropped him from their lists. FIFA 22 has also removed him from the lineup. The allegations were made by Harriet Robson who posted photos, videos, and voice recordings of the abuse.

“We can’t ignore the types of issues we see. You know, I’m very vocal about when we have issues we need to own them, we need to acknowledge them because it’s the only way we’re going to be able to find solutions.”

“One of the challenges that football has is that it’s very male-dominated. We still see that in leadership positions across the game. And that’s both in the on-field positions, by which I mean, technical staffs, but also off the field.”

“People like me, chief executives, and senior management figures. So, I think we would be benefited in so many ways in football to have a more diverse environment.”

Last month, Italy’s Supreme Court confirmed the conviction of former Brazil and AC Milan striker Robinho, who now lives in Brazil and played for the club before Gazidis arrived, to nine years in prison for his involvement in a gang rape in 2013, according to Reuters.

Gazidis became CEO of AC Milan, which has won 18 league titles in Italy, in 2018 having previously been CEO of English Premier League side Arsenal for close to 10 years.

“It’s not just this domestic violence and domestic abuse issue, we see a lot of issues across the game that has to be addressed. And you have to be proactive and acknowledge what the issues are before you can really take steps.”

Konami Drops Mason Greenwood. Another sponsor released an official statement dropping Greenwood from their game. Konami is responsible for the PES series of football games and its new eFootball game. The release is currently set for spring 2022.

Konami released a statement. “In light of the serious allegations made against Mason Greenwood, the player will be removed from our football titles until further notice. Specifically for PES 2021 on mobile, users cannot newly obtain the player, but existing owners are unaffected. Konami condemns violence of any kind. While police inquiries are ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

FIFA 22 has previously released a statement saying “Mason Greenwood has been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and has also been suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) packs and Ultimate Draft.”

Nike previously suspended Mason Greenwood’s contract. They recently released a statement ending their sponsorship for good. Nike spokesperson said, “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete”.

Rifts within the Manchester United team have also been reported recently. Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Victor Lindelof unfollowed him on Instagram.

United’s shirt sponsor TeamViewer said they are “closely monitoring developments”. 

DHL also issued a statement, saying: “We are aware of the recent allegations against Mason Greenwood. While we do not tolerate any kind of violence, we will not be commenting on the situation while the investigation is ongoing. Our partnership with Manchester United encompasses the team, the club and the global brand, and not one specific individual”.

Sponsors continue to drop out of contracts with Mason Greenwood following his arrest on suspicion of abuse. Konami dropping Mason Greenwood is only the latest on the string of cancellations he has received.

The 18-year-old high school victim recently released a statement thanking everyone for the support. She also said there will be no further comment until investigations are ongoing.

Manchester United seems to be divided in terms of their former teammate’s fate. According to reports, the players of the football team are clashing over the decision to remove him.

Mason Greenwood was arrested last week for suspicion of rape, sexual assault, assault, and threats to kill. He was then released by the GMP after he posted bail. Videos, photos, and recordings of him committing the acts in question were posted on Instagram. His 18-year-old victim also posted a comment thanking everyone. The GMP investigation is ongoing.

In response to this arrest that went viral, Manchester United decided not to allow him back to the team. They announced his removal from the team saying they do not condone acts of violence. Nike followed by canceling their contract with the star. FIFA 22 also removed him from the player lineup in their February 1 update. Manchester United also announced that fans can trade their Mason Greenwood shirts. England manager Gareth Southgate also held his offer back.

Famous teammates Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Victor Lindelof unfollowed him on Instagram. A source said to The Sun “one player, in particular, is furious about it. He feels that ditching Mason shows they are not together. If Mason is convicted of what he has been accused of, then clearly all the players will be horrified.”

The source also added “Some of those closest to him feel the course of justice should be allowed to run. But when some of the players started dumping him, they felt they had to as well. One of the players said it showed how the squad wasn’t together and showed that too many times they act as individuals”.

On Thursday, United boss Rangnick admitted that the forward’s arrest was a ‘topic within the team’, saying: ‘We had internal discussions but I’m pretty sure everyone will understand those internal discussions should stay internal.
