After long weeks of protests and blockages, the police have cleared the protesters. It began when the truckers protested the vaccination mandate. They did not agree with the mandatory quarantine or vaccination for those returning from the border.

“Protesters continue to be aggressive and assaultive on officers. They are refusing to comply with the orders to move,” police tweeted Saturday about 12:20 p.m. ET. “You will have seen officers use a chemical irritant in an effort to stop the assaultive behavior and for officer safety.”

Some protesters were wearing armor and carrying grenades and fireworks. “One protester launched a gas canister and was arrested,” Ottawa police said.

“We were slow and methodical, yet you were assaultive and aggressive with officers and the horses. Based on your behavior, we are responding by including helmets and batons for our safety,” police added.

There were also reports of protesters using children to prevent police from moving in. “This is a reminder if you bring a minor with you to an unlawful protest you may be charged and be fined up to $5000 and potentially spend up to five years in prison,” police said in a tweet.

A small group remains in the capital as the rest were being cleared. The massive truck convoy was cleared from Ambassador’s Bridge. Protester’s bank accounts were frozen to limit the financing of the protest. Some trucks were also confiscated.

There were earlier reports of an effort to flood the 911 lines and other non-emergency phone lines. This happened last week as well. The police described a number of US-based numbers flooding the phone lines. It almost caused it to crash.

The protests began when truckers wanted the government to recall the vaccination mandate. Truckers who regularly cross the US-Canada border were given two options when returning from a trip. The first choice was to take a mandatory 14-day isolation period every time they return. The second option is to be fully vaccinated. Many of the truckers did not agree with either of the choices and began blocking major roads with their trucks. Later on, other people who wants to challenge other COVID measures joined the protest. Some didn’t want the mandatory wearing of masks, others did not agree with social distancing, and so on.

The convoy has caused heavy traffic for weeks along the border. Many supply chain logistics were challenged. There were also citizens who began to complain regarding the loud noise in the capital. Especially for those who are in the capital. The protests began to be inconvenient for many.

On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergency Act. This allows the government to temporarily ban public gatherings and freeze bank accounts. Since then, the police began clearing the convoy. Yesterday, they arrested two leaders of the protest after freezing their bank accounts.

The police vowed not to rest until the remaining protesters have been cleared. On the other hand, protesters vowed to keep fighting for freedom.

The most economically destructive barrier, a bridge between Windsor, Ontario, with the US state of Michigan, was removed last weekend. Trucker demonstrations in Coutts, Alberta, and Emerson, Manitoba, were put to a stop this week.

The action comes ahead of the weekend when a core group of protestors who have remained on the streets throughout the week is usually joined by thousands of more demonstrators.

In the House of Commons on Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau justified his government’s use of the Emergencies Act, claiming that the demonstrations pose a threat to the national economy, public safety, and US relations.

Trudeau said the government is not overriding the charter of rights and freedoms, nor limiting the right to peaceful assembly. “We are not preventing people from exercising their right to protest legally,” he added.

The Windsor Police has also warned arrests if they continue to block the Ambassador Bridge. In Alberta, Royal Canadian Mounted Police made arrests on Monday. They have seized 13 long guns, handguns, multiple sets of body armor, a machete and a large quantity of ammunition and high-capacity magazines connected to a small, organized group within a larger protest at the US border crossing in Coutts, Alberta. 11 people were arrested near the border crossing that connects Coutts to Sweet Grass, Montana.
