The media reported 164 deaths and over 5000 additional arrests after the order. The unrest was initially attributed to the increase of LPG prices after the government removed the price cap. A few days of violent protest have led to the deaths of both protesters and police members. The government also claimed that foreign-backed terrorist was behind the continuous protests. A claim which many protesters refute saying – “we are not terrorists”.

The CSTO forces which include troops from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan were deployed across the country. CSTO commander-general Andrey Serdyukov stated that troops are “performing tasks to protect important military, state, and socially significant facilities in the city of Almaty and adjacent area”. He also stated that the deployed men will stay until the situation is “fully stabilized”.

The country’s central bank has temporarily suspended exchange. The banking system will be restored in stages depending on the priority of the social significance of the services.

The European Union condemned acts of violence in the country. Pope Francis in his weekly Angelus prayer has prayed for the victims of the violent protests.

The world continues to watch as the United States urged the local government to exercise caution. The United States has emphasized a peaceful resolution to avoid unnecessary damage.

In a televised address, President Tokayev declares “I have given the order to law enforcement and the army to shoot to kill without warning. Those who don’t surrender will be eliminated.” This statement was in light of the current allegations that big terrorist groups took advantage of the protests to perform violent deeds against the people.

In a few days, the government have detained over 3000 protesters and reported 26 deaths and 18 injuries. On the law enforcement side, they have reported 18 casualties and 700 injured officers.

Recently, the government lifted its price cap of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) products. The government sighted that they can no longer subsidize LPG. Many of the population began protesting since the majority of them use LPG fueled cars. The prices essentially doubled after the removal of the price cap.

The government tries to make concessions announcing a 180-day price cap on LPG however the protests haven’t stopped.  The Collective Security Treaty Organization has begun deploying troops to assist the government in a peace-keeping mission.

In 2019, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took over the reins from President Nursultan Nazarbayev. President Nazarbayev served an 18-year term before the transition of power.

Recently, the government lifted its price cap of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) products. The government sighted that they can no longer subsidize LPG. Many of the population began protesting since the majority of them use LPG fueled cars. The prices essentially doubled after the removal of the price cap.

The protests began on January 2 in Zhanaozen which then spread across the country. This has caused numerous clashes among the police and the public. Nationwide, there has been a report of about 1,000 people who have suffered injuries from the riots.

As part of the government response, they have requested assistance from Russia. This is in the authority of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Russian paratroopers have been sent to Kazakhstan to help stabilize the situation.

Many government officials have resigned due to the incident. The government tries to make concessions by delaying the removal of the price cap.
