According to reports, the first batch of Sputnik vaccines is expected to be produced at SII’s facilities in September and over 300 million doses of Sputnik V vaccines will be produced in India per year.

The development comes days after the drugs controller general of India (DCGI) granted test license to SII to manufacture Sputnik V small batches of vaccines meant for examination, analysis and test purposes at SII it’s Hadapsar facility located in Pune.

“We hope to make millions of doses in the coming months with trial batches starting in the month of September. With high efficacy and a good safety profile, it is critical that the Sputnik vaccine is accessible in full measure for people across India and the world,” SII CEO Adar Poonawalla said.

“This strategic partnership is a major step to substantially increase our production capabilities demonstrating a perfect example of joining forces and expertise to save lives both in India and around the world,” RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev said. 

SII is currently manufacturing Covishield, the local version of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, Covovax (developed by Novavax) and also holding trials of Codagenix vaccine in the United Kingdom. SII manufactured more than 10 crore doses of covishield in June 2021

According to RDFI, Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine has been registered in 67 countries with a total population of over 3.5 billion people.

Meanwhile, even Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has entered into a partnership with RDFI to market the first 250 doses of Sputnik V in India. The company also announced that commercial launch of the vaccine in India will begin in the coming week.

The decision on Covaxin approval will be made by the second week of August, 2021

Yesterday, Bharat Biotech’s joint managing director Suchitra Ella said the vaccine is moving towards emergency use listing. “Approval from WHO is not expected to be a long drawn process as cell line and majority of our facilities have already been audited and approved by WHO for our other vaccines in the past,” Ms Ella said in a tweet.

Dr Swaminathan’s remark today came on the heels of a row over approval for Covaxin and Covishield by the European Union.

After India’s tough stance on “vaccine passport” insisting on reciprocity, nine European nations cleared Serum Institute of India’s Covishield, sources said.

India had said that unless the European Union accepts Covishield and Covaxin certificates, their covid-19 vaccine certificates will not be accepted in the country and people from EU will face mandatory quarantine upon arrival in India.

The coronavirus vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute has already received emergency approval from WHO and there were questions on why it did not get approval of the European Medicines Agency, which has already approved the vaccine’s European version, manufactured by AstraZeneca.

Covax – the worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines – has pushed for universal approval of vaccines okayed by WHO.

In a strong statement, Covax urged “all regional, national and local government authorities to recognise as fully vaccinated all people who have received COVID-19 vaccines that have been deemed safe and effective by the World Health Organization and/or the 11 Stringent Regulatory Authorities (SRAs) approved for COVID-19 vaccines,

Adar Poonawalla has said through a tweet on Twitter that he has raised this issue at a high level. He tweeted, “I realize that many Indians, who have taken the Covidshield vaccine, are facing problems traveling to the EU. I assure everyone I have taken this to the highest level and hope That this matter will be resolved soon.

Several EU countries have begun issuing digital vaccine passports, which will allow Europeans to travel freely for work or tourism. The Vaccine Passport will serve as proof that a person has been vaccinated against the coronavirus. The European Union had previously stated that countries within the European Union should issue certificates regardless of the type of Covid-19 vaccine, but the technical specifications of the ‘Green Pass’ indicate that it may be obtained from an EU-wide marketing authorization. Covid will be limited to vaccines.

At present, four Covid-19 vaccines have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which can only be issued green passes by EU member states to those who have had them. The EMA has approved the following Covid-19 vaccines: Pfizer/BioNtech’s Comirnati, Moderna, AstraZeneca-Oxford’s Wexgerviria and Johnson & Johnson’s Johnson.

According to the report, the Covishield manufactured in India has not yet been recognized by the EMA. While both Vaxjeveria and Covishield are AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines. The Covishield vaccine in India is made by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India, which has been approved by the Siam Biosciences. India has also given Covidshield vaccine to many countries as a help.
