India and Thailand have maintained a cordial relationship for centuries now. There is archaeological, epigraphic and other historical evidence vouching for Indo-Thai cultural penetration from the early centuries of the common era or even earlier. Every year many tourists from India and Thailand travel to and fro, creating a healthy perpetual cultural exchange. Today we explore cultural similarities between India and Thailand through our favourite cuisines.

Thailand is known for its unique cuisines and amalgamation of flavours that delight our taste buds. Some of the leading Thailand cuisines are curry-based and trace their origin back to Indian Buddhist monks. The frequent foreign trade of herbs and spices also gave impetus to giving some Thai Cuisine a little bit of Indian touch.

Some of our favorite Thai cuisines that will rejuvenate your taste buds:

Khao Soi Curry:

An underrated but one of the most delicious curries that all spice lovers should try. Traditionally, it contains hand-cut rice noodles in clear soup broth, topped with your favourite toppings of eggs, cabbage, and more.

Khao Phad or Thai Fried Rice:

The Indian version of this dish is our favourite biryani. It contains a mixture of rice, egg, garlic, and onions with the taste of herbs and spices, topped with a fiery Thai fish sauce. Apart from being delicious, this dish is also very high in protein. Something to consider the next time you go through that menu.

Gaeng Panang, aka Panang Curry: Using Red curry paste, onions, garlic, fish sauce, peppers, basil leaves, coconut milk and kaffir lime leaves, complemented by tasty, spicy, and rich ingredients. This famous Thai curry combines Malaysian, Indian, and Burmese tastes with a unique aroma.

Kaeng Luang:

If you want something mild because the Thai red scares the bejesus out of you, this is the dish for you. With a mixture of turmeric powder, yellow paste, lemongrass, galangal, coconut cream, and coconut milk, it holds all the flavours of the red curry yet is milder.

Massaman Curry:

Lemongrass, galangal, coconut milk, cinnamon, and cloves are some of the traditional Thai ingredients used in this curry with a unique flavour twist.

Make sure to try any of these delicious Thai cuisines the next time you visit a restaurant; you will not be disappointed by their taste, aroma, or ingredients.

There is no doubt that butter chicken holds a unique place in Indian gastronomic heritage. On Indian restaurant menus around the world this is one of the most popular dishes. It is a straightforward curry, unlike those that are more elaborate. Even though butter chicken does not have complex spices or elaborate cooking methods, it has an irresistible taste!

In the tandoor or open flame, the marinated chicken is cooked in a variety of spices. A buttery sauce infused with aromatic spices, tangy tomato puree, and creamy cashews is prepared to submerge the cooked chicken. The exotic spices used in this gravy are Kashmiri red chili, green cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and a few green chilies and onions that is absolutely optional. To temper the sharpness of the tomatoes, a touch of sugar is added to the gravy. In order to make the gravy rich and velvety, add a generous spoonful of cream and butter along with roasted Kasoori methi which gives it a distinctive flavor.

The velvety gravy will send you into a food coma if you dig into it along with butter naan. We recommend visiting an Indian restaurant near you to satisfy your taste buds.

More and more people are becoming interested in Oriental food, with Indian and Thai food standing out as some of the most popular choices. It’s no secret that Indian and Thai food is a fascinating culinary experience. In terms of flavor and diversity, both cuisines are incomparable.

Thai & Indian cuisine is frequently mistakenly thought to be quite similar. Actually, it is the reverse.

Indian food is about rich flavors of exotic spices like nutmeg, black pepper, cinnamon, and green and black cardamon with yogurt-based curries, whereas Thai food is based on coconut milk with aromatics like lemongrass, galangal, and fish sauce to name a few.

Indian cuisine consists of all nutritional components in a single meal providing the body’s nutritional needs. Thai food uses a lot of light sauces to enhance the taste of the dish and those sauces have a unique umami flavor.

Additionally, Indian cuisine generally uses dairy products such as cottage cheese and soybean products as sources of protein. It is not uncommon for Indian cuisine to use chicken and fish in many of its exotic preparations across the country. Whereas, Thai cuisine is centered around seafood, especially shrimp as seafood is readily available in the country.

Both cuisines exhibit a difference in street food as well. There are many tasty Indian dishes to try when visiting India, including succulent cottage cheese marinated with yogurt, grilled vegetables, and barbecued juicy tender pieces of chicken. In contrast, Thai street food revolves around tangy Pad Thai with juicy shrimp, crispy raw papaya salad, and sour, spicy Tom Yum soup.

Despite the differences, both cuisines use exotic spices and ingredients, especially chilies, to make them very flavorful. Both cuisines emphasize the use of fresh ingredients in their cooking and canned food is rarely used.

India and Thailand both serve delicious food that is unique on its own. While Thai food is easy to find in Thailand, do not miss out on the wide variety of exotic lip-smacking Indian dishes, which are unique to the country.
