“In this body with its perception and consciousness I declare the world of pain, the origin, the cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation“— Gautama Buddha.

Vesak, also known as Visakha Bucha Day, holds immense religious significance for the people of Thailand. It serves as a solemn reminder for the people to reflect upon and internalise the teachings of Buddha.

Lord Buddha was born in 623 BC as Prince Siddhartha to King Suddhodana and Queen Sirimahamaya at Lumpini Grove, between Kapilavetthu and Devadaha on the Nepal border.

He renounced his life as a prince and searched for the absolute truth. After thirty-five years of arduous quest for the absolute truth, he attained enlightenment on the full-moon night of Visakha and became known as Gautama Buddha.

At 80, following 45 years of teaching, Lord Buddha passed away in Kusinara on the full-moon night of the sixth lunar month.

Vesak thus marks the three significant events of Buddha’s life — his birth, enlightenment, and passing. It is observed during the full moon of the sixth lunar month, also known as the Visakha month, typically falling in either May or June.

However, if an additional lunar month (Adhikamasa) is added in a given year, the festivities are held during the full moon night of the seventh lunar eclipse.

Tracking the Footsteps of Buddhism in Thailand

Following the third Buddhist council in 250 BC at Pataliputra (now Patna, Bihar), King Asoka, a devout follower of Buddhism, sought to disseminate the profound teachings of Buddha to the far reaches of the world.

To achieve this noble endeavour, he dispatched a cohort of Buddhist monks to various corners of the globe, carrying with them the illuminating wisdom of Buddha’s teachings.

Monks praying under banyan tree on Vesak

Among these monks, the venerable elders Sona and Uttara arrived in Suvarnabhumi (now Nakhon Pathom province, Thailand) to usher in the advent of Buddhism in Thailand.

The profound spiritual doctrines they espoused took root in the hearts of the Thai people, eventually becoming a defining aspect of their culture. During this time, people also witnessed the emergence of the iconic pagoda design, which stands testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Thailand.

How Vesak is Celebrated in Thailand

Like many Buddhist holidays in Thailand, Vesak encourages people to discourse on Buddha’s teachings and implement them daily. The celebration commences almost a week ahead, as devout Buddhists decorate their homes with vibrant yellow flags.

The day begins with the devotees paying homage to Buddha in their local temples with their families. It is the day of activities that express generosity and piety for the spiritual welfare of their community.

Thai people honouring monks on Vesak

As the day progresses, Thai people participate in spiritual discourses, delving into the profound teachings of Buddha’s life, expounding on the three pillars of Buddhism — Buddha, Dharma (truth), and Sangha (community). They offer prayers through meditative practices, seeking inner peace and enlightenment.

In the evening, people participate in a ceremonial circumambulation procession known as Wian Tian. This symbolic act entails walking clockwise around the temple’s ordination hall (Phra Ubosot), holding aloft lit candles, fragrant joss sticks, and delicate flowers.

Traditional Rituals of Vesak

The three significant traditional rituals embedded in the pious celebration of the day are:

❖ Tam Boon — denotes the practice of merit-making wherein devotees visit temples to attend Dham preaches and make offerings to other devotees to cultivate virtuous deeds and earn spiritual merits.

❖ Rub Sil — refers to observing the five precepts or the five moral codes to follow that include abstaining from (i) taking life, (ii) taking what is not given, (iii) sensuous misconduct, (iv) false speech, and (v) intoxication.

❖ Tak Bard — means offering food to the monks and other devotees in the temple.

People visiting temples and praying on Vesak

Important Things to Keep in Mind during Vesak

If you plan a trip to Thailand, this time is one of the best for connecting with divinity and spirituality. However, if you are a tourist, you must keep a few things in mind:

❖ The sale and consumption of alcohol during the festival are banned.

❖ You must follow a proper dress code to attend, generally wearing white clothes as a sign of respect.

❖ If you want to attend the prayers, you must check particular temples’ timings. Usually held in the morning.

It is undoubtedly one of the most revered festivals in Thailand and bears a mesmerising and enlightening experience for everyone.

History of Royal Ploughing Ceremony

Ancient Southeast Asia has witnessed the presence of animistic rituals intertwined with agricultural practices since time immemorial. With the influence of Hinduism, most nations melded harmoniously with the existing animistic customs.

The inception of the Royal Ploughing ceremonial rites traces its origin to the profound narrative of the Ramayana. Within the pages of the great Indian epic, the ceremony assumes its prominence. The story talks about Janak, the king of Mithila, who witnessed a miraculous emergence of an infant girl from the earth’s embrace. The prodigious child later became Sita, the indomitable heroine of the epic. Her name signifies her connection to the sacred act of ploughing.

It coexisted with another auspicious Buddhist ritual known as Phuetcha Mongkhon, or the “auspicious plantation,” colloquially referred to as the Royal Harvest Festival. Over time, the intricacies of this auspicious ceremony have undergone subtle modifications.

How Royal Ploughing Ceremony is Held?

Known as ‘Kan Phuetchamongkhon‘ in Thailand, the festival symbolises strengthening the ties between the monarch, the government and the farmers. In 1957 the government of Thailand declared it as a public holiday.

It usually takes place during May or June, with the exact date decided by the monks, serving as a significant marker for the advent of the rice-growing season.

The ceremony serves a dual purpose: to forecast the impending Harvest and to bestow blessings upon the crops.

The proceedings entail the participation of two revered oxen, lavishly adorned with golden embellishments and other exquisite ornaments. These majestic creatures are harnessed to a plough and gracefully guided towards a symbolic furrow.

The oxen are presented with seven meticulously arranged trays laden with a cornucopia of sustenance, including rice, corn, beans, sesame seeds, grass, water, and wine. The oxen consume these offerings by diligently ploughing, interpreted as a divination of the forthcoming Harvest.

Following the ploughing ritual, the seeds and water are sanctified by monks and Brahmins, invoking blessings upon them. The organisers distribute the surplus provisions to the less fortunate, ensuring their well-being and giving them a sense of inclusion in this sacred celebration.

Typically a distinguished figure from the royal family or an esteemed government official supervises the grand event.

The Two Parts of the Royal Ploughing Ceremony

Cultivating Ceremony

Located within the esteemed Grand Palace Complex in Bangkok, the sacred grounds of Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, serve as the setting for this segment.

Amidst this solemn occasion, the reigning monarch, or their designated representative, graces the proceedings. In a display of utmost reverence, they tenderly present the ceremonial ring and sword to the esteemed Lord of the Harvest, signifying the transfer of symbolic authority.

During the ceremony, monks pour an offering of lustral water with sacred blessings over the hands and forehead of the Lord of the Harvest. Signifying the purification of his being and imbuing him with divine favour.

Ploughing Ceremony

The day following the private cultivating ceremony marks the celebration of the unfolding of the ploughing ceremony. In adherence to time-honoured customs, the designated venue for this revered event is the Sanam Luang ceremonial ground.

The ceremony begins its sacred proceedings between 8:19 AM and 08:49 AM. The inaugural act starts with the Lord of the Harvest’s selection of a single folded garment from three options, each holding power to foretell the rainfall that shall grace the forthcoming season.

The length of the chosen garment portends the anticipated precipitation, with the longest fabric suggesting minimal rainfall, while the shortest garment heralds a bountiful deluge.

Verdant rice field

The next moment holds immense significance as the appointed Lord of the Harvest, accompanied by an entourage of sacred oxen, priests, umbrella bearers, musicians, and four celestial maidens, gracefully proceeds. These ethereal maidens carry baskets overflowing with rice seeds, adding to the captivating spectacle.

Together, they embark on a symbolic ploughing of the hallowed ceremonial ground, diligently traversing its expanse in a ceremonious procession spanning three circuits. The resounding echoes of conches and drumbeats reverberate through the air, encapsulating the palpable aura of this grand spectacle.

Thailand ushers into a new year with the celebration of Songkran. While the official dates of the festival are from April 13-15, the manner and timing of the celebrations vary across provinces.

The water fights are known for their vitality in central and eastern Thailand. They occur several days after other parts of the country have concluded their festivities and put away their water pistols until the next year. Similarly, the people of Chonburi province observe the Wan Lai Festival from April 16-20.

What is Wan Lai Festival?

Wan Lai is a Thai term that means “day that flows”. Thai people often club the Wan Lai Festival with the last days of Songkran as it is an additional holiday to the Thai New Year.

The origins of the Wan Lai Festival are deeply rooted in the history and tradition of Thailand. It started as a practice to honour the gods and ensure a bountiful harvest.

Today, the festival incorporates modern twists while retaining its traditional elements, making it a true reflection of Thailand’s vibrant cultural heritage.

Held annually in the southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Songkhla, the Wan Lai Festival is a burst of colour and activity that captivates both locals and tourists alike.

How is Wan Lai Festival Celebrated?

Water fights, parades, cultural performances, and food characterise the festival. It is a time for people to forget their differences and unite harmoniously to celebrate the New Year.

One of the most significant aspects of the Wan Lai festival is the water fights. People throw water at each other using buckets, guns, and hoses. The water fights are fun and a way to cool off during Thailand’s hot and humid weather.

Apart from the water fights, the Wan Lai festival is known for its colourful parades. People dress in traditional costumes and parade through the streets, showcasing their cultural heritage. The parades are accompanied by music and dance performances, making it a joyous occasion for everyone.

Local Thai Food to Try during Wan Lai Festival

Another important aspect of the Wan Lai festival is the food. Traditional Thai delicacies are prepared and served during the festival. The food is not only delicious but also reflects the cultural diversity of Thailand.

Some of the popular dishes include:

Tom Yam: A popular Thai soup renowned for its spicy and tangy flavours and is typically prepared with prawns or shrimp.

Pad Thai: It is no surprise that this dish has become a beloved component of Thailand’s rich culinary heritage. Pad Thai comprises mouth-watering ingredients such as rice noodles, succulent shrimp, crunchy peanuts, a fluffy scrambled egg, and crisp bean sprouts.

Som Tam: Made from fresh green papaya, Som Tam salad boasts the perfect balance of sour, spicy, sweet, and salty flavors.

Satay: It’s a classic Thai dish with sliced marinated chicken accompanied by a sauce obtained from peanuts and chilli sauce, topped with shredded shallots, sambal (chilli paste), and a generous squeeze of lime juice.

The Popular Sand Sculptures of Bang Saen Beach

Every year, during the Wan Lai Festival in Bang Saen, a magnificent display of up to 100 meticulously crafted sand sculptures grace the shoreline.

These awe-inspiring creations are predominantly in the form of sand pagodas, also known as chedi sai. They encompass diverse structures, including tuk-tuks, elephants, and mermaids, all brought to life through the magical medium of sand.

Wan Lai is a time for reflection and renewal. It is a time for people to unite and strengthen their bonds with family and friends. It is a time to let go of the past and look forward to a brighter future.

Wan Lai encourages people to forgive and forget and start afresh. The festival also serves as a reminder to preserve and promote Thai culture and traditions for future generations.

If you ever get the chance to visit Thailand during the second week of April, do not miss the opportunity to experience the Wan Lai festival.
