Bangkok, August 25, 2025 — Thailand is set to redefine travel with an ambitious new initiative offering 200,000 free domestic flight tickets to international tourists, including Indians, starting September 2025. Titled “Explore Thailand’s Hidden Gems,” this campaign aims to lure adventurers beyond the well-trodden paths of Bangkok and Phuket, spotlighting lesser-known destinations rich in culture, nature, and history.

A Bold Move to Boost Tourism

Spearheaded by Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the “Explore Thailand’s Hidden Gems” program is designed to distribute tourism revenue more evenly across the country. From September to November 2025, international travelers booking standard air tickets to Thailand through participating airlines or online travel agents will receive up to two free domestic flights, each subsidized at 1,750 baht (approximately ₹4,700) for a one-way trip or 3,500 baht (₹9,400) for a round trip. The offer includes a 20 kg baggage allowance, making it easier for visitors to explore Thailand’s diverse landscapes.

The initiative, backed by a 700 million baht (₹1,900 crore) budget, awaits cabinet approval but is already generating buzz among travel enthusiasts. Six major Thai airlines—Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Vietjet—are on board, ensuring seamless access to destinations like Sukhothai, Lampang, and Trang.

Unlike traditional tourism campaigns, this program emphasizes Thailand’s hidden treasures. Travelers can explore:

“India is one of our top markets, with over 1.9 million visitors in 2024,” said Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong. “This initiative invites Indian travelers to discover Thailand’s soul—its quiet towns, sacred sites, and untouched beaches—without the added cost of domestic flights.” The campaign aligns with Thailand’s 2025 “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year,” aiming to boost visitor numbers to 40 million.

Why September to November?

The travel window coincides with Thailand’s shoulder season, when popular destinations like Phuket and Krabi face monsoon challenges. By redirecting tourists to regions with milder weather, such as Northern Thailand’s lush hills or the Gulf’s calmer shores, the program ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience. It also supports local economies in secondary cities, where tourism has lagged behind major hubs.

How It Works

Eligible tourists, including those from India’s 93 visa-free countries, can claim their free domestic tickets when booking international flights through airline websites, multi-city options, or travel agents. Those who’ve already booked international tickets may receive vouchers upon arrival, redeemable for domestic flights, pending final terms. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will oversee the program, ensuring smooth implementation across all 77 provinces.

Economic and Cultural Impact

The initiative is expected to generate 9 billion baht (₹2,400 crore) in direct tourism revenue, with a broader economic ripple effect of 22 billion baht (₹5,900 crore). Local businesses, from homestays in Chiang Rai to seafood stalls in Hua Hin, stand to benefit. The program also promotes cultural exchange, with Indian travelers encouraged to explore Thailand’s Buddhist heritage sites, mirroring India’s own spiritual landmarks.

Challenges and Criticisms

Some local tourism operators, like Chiang Mai’s Punlop Saejew, argue the campaign would have greater impact during the low season (May–August). Others highlight the need for clear safety advisories, especially near Thailand’s southern borders. The TAT has pledged to provide real-time travel updates to address these concerns.
