UbonRatchathani Candle Festival will take place from 11-17 July 2022. It is one of the most well-known festivals of the year. It is held every year in UbonRatchathani, about 500 km north of Bangkok. The festival lasts for one month, during which sculptors from various nations sculpt stunning sculptures.

Awe-inspiring sculptures, objects, and structures crafted from candles will leave you speechless at the Candle Festival. This is one of Thailand’s religious festivals commemorating the beginning of Buddhist Lent. It was customary for the townspeople to offer candles to monks to receive blessings.

Thailand’s Candle Festival is the result of the transformation of traditional candles into beautiful art pieces over time. The wax-covered candles are sculpted from wood and feature elaborate designs. Sculpted candles often depict mythological figures and are carved by artists from around the world.

UbonRatchathani province offers the best view of the candle festival, even though it is celebrated nationwide. These candle structures are paraded through the streets on floats all the way up to the temples. While the procession is in progress, you can enjoy some street food while hearing the bands play and watching the dancers perform. In the evening, when the cities are illuminated by candlelight, the candle festival presents an unusual sight.

The ‘Nora’ form of dance theatre and improvisational singing of Southern Thailand has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The decision made at the 16th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is being held online from 13-18 December, 2021, sees Nora become Thailand’s second inscription on the list after the ‘Khon’ masked dance drama was inscribed in November 2018. Thailand joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in September 2016.

Nora and Khon are among Thailand’s most significant performing arts. The Department of Cultural Promotion under the Ministry of Culture in 2009 declared Khon as the national Intangible Cultural Heritage.

UNESCO’s inscription of Nora on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity reads:

“Nora is a lively and acrobatic form of dance theatre and improvisational singing from Southern Thailand. Performances normally include a long oral invocation, followed by a presentation by a lead character who dances with vigorous and elaborate movements of the legs, arms, and fingers.

The performances are usually based on stories about the former lives of Buddha or about legendary heroes. An ensemble plays highly rhythmic and fast-paced music with a traditional Southern oboe providing the melody and strong rhythms produced by drums, gongs, cymbals, and wooden clappers.

The main Nora performers – whether male or female – wear colourful costumes with crowns or headdresses, beads, bird-like wings tied around the waist, ornate scarves, and swan tails that give them a bird-like appearance. Performers also wear long, metallic fingernails that curl out from the fingertips.

Nora is a community-based practice with deep cultural and social significance for the people of Southern Thailand. Performances use regional dialects, music, and literature to reinforce cultural life and social bonds among local people.

Over 500 years old, Nora is performed in local community centres and at temple fairs and cultural events, and is passed on through training by masters in homes, community organisations and educational institutions.”

Some of the curate experiences in which everyone wants to live and make the lives enjoyable
and animated. One such experience is the festival. Festival is celebrated to give a positive influence in each and everyone and keep them away from temporal distractions. Festival is all
about lights, music, food, etc. so everyone joins the festivals with their friends and family. One
such beautiful and grand festival celebrated in Thailand is “Loy Krathong”.

Loy Krathong is a Siamese festival celebrated each year with a lot of enjoyment and entertainment in the kingdom of Thailand.

Thailand people conduct a festival every other week. They find some sort of reason to dance.
It is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in Thailand. It is also celebrated in places that have
significant southern Tai cultures. This festival Loy Krathong refers to float a basket

The whole idea of the festival is that it is a new beginning. When people lit the candle, they send a prayer, memory, or wish for a new start to their lives and forget the bad that happened in the past. So the Thai people and the foreigners believe that they leave their misfortunes downstream and go away for good. Loi means “to float”. Before sending the basket into the river, they burn the incense and light the candles and that is kept on the top of the basket of Krathongs.

Due to some circumstances, if you couldn’t able to make a basket you can purchase the baskets in all the major waterways in Thailand. The prices vary depending upon how much work and beautiful flowers it consists of. Then we can see many women wearing Thailand’s traditional queen attire and moving under the heat. You can see many people mainly girls and women fainting due to the unbearable heat. Make sure that, you remain hydrated while participating in the celebrations.

What is Loy Krathong?
Loi Krathong is celebrated by the Thai people during the full moon day of the 12th month in the Thai lunar calendar. The date is not constant every year. This grand festival starts as soon as the rainy season is over. Sometimes it starts in the month of November.

The climate will be dry and cool at the end of the month. So it is the best time to visit the Land of Smiles It is considered to be the festival of light. As it means to float a basket, the Thai people readily make a traditional basket made of banana leaf to float on that event. It is believed that the festival was first begun in the Sukhothai kingdom, situated 5 hours north of
Bangkok.

Well, yes, it is, and this is among the most beautiful things about Thai people that make Thai culture unique

What Thai people do during the festival?
The Loy Krathong is mainly celebrated to thank the goddess of water. The goddess of water is Mae Khongkha, they pray by sending the decorated baskets down the river. Most of the people pray and say thanks to the goddess for giving water while others pray for forgiveness for using plenty of water or contaminating it.

To decorate the basket, Thai people use local flowers, candles, and incense. The people go
with their families and assemble near the river, lit the candles, and float the basket into the river.

The festival is not considered a religious holiday in Thailand, but people come to experience immense entertainment and joy. The basket in the boat travels throughout the kingdom of Thailand. Even, some of them add money to the basket.
