Chef Chander’s appointment at the Two-Key MICHELIN-listed beachfront resort in Southern Thailand will add a new element of culinary expertise to the hotel’s dining outlet, The Naga Kitchen.

“I have been working in top-class kitchens at hotels and restaurants across India and Thailand for more than 10 years, specialising in North Indian cuisine,” said Chef Chander. “For me, cooking is more than just preparing food — it is about creating memorable dining experiences. I always focus on fresh ingredients, balanced flavors, and attention to detail in every dish. I am especially passionate about Indian curries, biryani, kebabs, tandoori specialties, and Arabic cuisine.”

Chandler said that his culinary journey began with a passion for traditional spices and the art of tandoor cooking. He modestly claims that his specialties include dishes such as dal makhani, Butter Chicken, and Paneer Butter Masala.

Chander comes to Banyan Tree Krabi from the 5-star Sinae Phuket where he was Indian and Arabic Chef, a title he previously held at the Keemala Hotel on the same Thai island. His resumé also includes experiences at the Hotel Germanus Springs hotel in Kodaikanal and De Karavali restaurant in Bangalore where he honed his skills in Tandoor cooking.

“Chef Chander will help us expand our culinary identity with his expertise in authentic Indian cuisine,” said Ms Porntip Narangsiya, Banyan Tree Krabi’s Director of Food & Beverage. “Of course, visitors of all nationalities love Indian food, and we are especially privileged to welcome many guests from India, including large parties for beachfront weddings and celebrations. Barry Robinson didn’t start his career in a corner office.

He started by making beds.

“I did everything,” he says, reflecting on his early days at his family’s hotel in New Zealand’s North Island. “Waiting tables, housekeeping—you name it.”

Today, he’s the President and Managing Director of International Operations at Travel + Leisure Co., the global developer of Club Wyndham Asia. He oversees the strategic growth of the company’s vacation ownership business outside North America, managing more than 100 properties across four vacation clubs, including Club Wyndham Asia and Accor Vacation Club.

It’s a long way from changing sheets. But if you ask him, the heart of the job hasn’t changed much at all.

“It’s always been about people,” he says.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

There’s no such thing as “typical” when you’re leading operations across Asia Pacific and beyond.

Barry is based in the Middle East but frequently travels across Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand. His days are a mix of:

• Planning long-term strategy

• Visiting resorts

• Reviewing sales performance

• Exploring new acquisition opportunities

• Meeting members and teams on the ground

At the core of it all? Growth and guest experience.

“My role is about balancing daily operations with long-term vision,” he explains. “We need to stay competitive, agile, and above all, guest-obsessed.”

Leadership development is also high on his priority list. The company invests heavily in structured interviews, upskilling programs, and succession planning.

“We believe in identifying future leaders early,” he says. “Then giving them the space to grow.”

Why Hospitality? Why Now?

Even after briefly stepping into entrepreneurship, Barry found himself pulled back into hospitality.

“It’s the chance to create unforgettable experiences,” he says. “For members, for guests, and for our teams.”

And Asia Pacific is where much of that excitement is happening right now.

Club Wyndham Asia’s member base continues to grow across Thailand, India, and other emerging markets. Its resort network now spans Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Japan, and even Italy.

“The potential in Asia Pacific is enormous,” he says. “Rising affluence, strong digital connectivity, and a growing appetite for shared ownership models—it’s all coming together.”

But success in Asia isn’t just about expansion. It’s about cultural understanding.

“It’s not just about speaking the language,” Barry notes. “It’s about understanding the nuance.”

That, he says, is the real challenge—and the real motivation.

Leading Across Cultures

Managing teams across multiple countries requires more than business skills. It requires empathy.

“Leading across cultures demands adaptability and respect,” Barry explains.

From celebrating Songkran in Thailand to Ramadan in Muslim-majority markets and Chinese New Year across the region, cultural traditions are embraced company-wide.

“These shared celebrations strengthen our team spirit,” he says.

Open communication is key. So is empowering local teams.

“We combine regional insight with global alignment,” he explains. “That’s how you stay culturally relevant and future-ready.”

The Toughest Tests

Two defining moments shaped Barry’s leadership journey: the 2007 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both hit the travel industry hard.

“We acted decisively,” he recalls. “We focused on supporting our people and maintaining transparent communication with our members.”

Instead of pulling back completely, the company prioritised talent retention and service continuity.

“What made it rewarding, despite the hardship, was seeing the strength and adaptability of our people,” he says.

The result? A more agile organisation, better prepared for the future.

Travel Is No Longer a Luxury—It’s a Lifestyle

If there’s one big shift Barry sees across Asia, it’s this: travel isn’t a once-a-year treat anymore.

“Travel is increasingly becoming a lifestyle choice rather than a luxury,” he says.

Remote work and flexible schedules have changed how people vacation. Professionals are blending work and leisure. Families are seeking deeper, more meaningful experiences.

Younger travellers, in particular, are prioritising:

• Experiences over ownership

• Wellness-focused stays

“I’d love to see a Club Wyndham resort in Koh Samui in the near future,” he adds.

Advice for Young Professionals in Hospitality

For aspiring leaders—especially young professionals or expats—Barry keeps it simple.

“Work harder than the person next to you and stay flexible.”

But effort alone isn’t enough.

“Be authentic,” he says. “Your leadership style should reflect who you are. Authenticity builds trust.”

And never underestimate small gestures.

“Remember a colleague’s name. Remember a guest’s story. Hospitality is personal—it’s the little things that create lasting impressions.”

What’s Next for Club Wyndham Asia?

Big things.

The brand recently added Club Wyndham Seminyak in Bali and Club Wyndham Shirakabaso Shiga Kogen in Nagano, Japan, bringing its portfolio to 25 destinations.

From Manipur to Thailand

Shirley grew up in Delhi but hails from Manipur in Northeast India. In 2017, she took a huge leap: moving to Thailand to follow her dreams. “It was scary, but totally worth it,” she says. “I became an entrepreneur, a community leader, and somehow managed to build businesses that bring people together.”

Through the Northeast India Society (NEIS), Shirley started with just 10 friends meeting in a park. Today, her community has grown to over 125 members, hosting gatherings in school cafeterias. “It’s still about helping people, whether it’s getting emergency documents or finding medical care. That’s why we do this,” she shares.

Turning Ideas into Businesses

Shirley’s first business, Bloom, started because expats in Bangkok couldn’t easily find flowers. After moving to Phuket, she expanded into Tips & Trips, helping women plan fun and safe trips, and designed a line of enamel pins celebrating solo female travelers.

“Starting a business was terrifying,” she laughs. “I had no clue what I was doing. But I found amazing mentors like Amy Deiner and the Lioness of Siam group. They kept me going when everyone else said I’d fail.”

One of Shirley’s proudest moments was hosting Meenakshi, a woman who rode her motorcycle from Assam to Phuket, crossing continents on her own. “Seeing her wear my pins and call them her ‘badges of courage’ made me realize my work is about celebrating women who dare to explore,” she says.

Facing Challenges and Finding Your Tribe

Shirley admits the toughest part of being a woman entrepreneur wasn’t business—it was handling the pressure from her conservative community back home. “Every family gathering in Delhi was a grilling session: ‘When are you getting married?’ ‘Why aren’t you doing a proper job?’” she says.

Her breakthrough came when she stopped sharing plans with people who only saw one path for women. Instead, she built a support system of mentors and friends who understood her vision.

Shirley often points out that Northeast India and Thailand share so much—from food to culture. “Fermented fish, bamboo shoots, slow-cooked stews—they’re everywhere. Even traditional dress and classical dance are strikingly similar,” she explains.

She encourages travelers to explore her homeland, highlighting the Seven Sisters states—Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh—and Sikkim. “If you drew a cultural map ignoring borders, Northeast India and Thailand would almost be like one big family,” she laughs.

Life, Work, Food, and Fun

Thailand became Shirley’s second home. Bangkok taught her networking and business skills; Phuket offers a relaxed, creative vibe. And the food? She can’t get enough of larb pla, tam khao phod (corn salad), and pak pong bpoo (crab curry).

When she’s not working, Shirley practices yoga, experiments with cooking, and takes her two Labrador puppies for chaotic beach walks. “Balance doesn’t mean perfection,” she says. “Some days are 12-hour work marathons. Other days, it’s sunset walks with the pups, brainstorming ideas for my next adventure.”

Inspiring Young Women

Shirley’s ultimate goal is to empower other women, especially from Northeast India. She dreams of workshops that teach practical life skills and encourage young women to chase their ideas.

“Trust that inner voice, even if it’s unconventional,” she says. “Find people who’ve actually done what you want to do. Your aunties will survive the shock, I promise!”

Looking Ahead

With more than 30 years of experience in kitchens around the world, from the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok to culinary stints in Hong Kong, Milan, Dubai, and Oslo, Chef Billy has mastered the art of blending global techniques with local soul. But it’s in Chiang Mai, surrounded by farmers, markets, and mountain air, that he’s truly found his rhythm.

“Being a chef has been one of the most rewarding journeys in my life,” he said. “I started humbly as a part-time cook’s helper at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. That’s where I discovered the joy of creating flavors that bring people together.”

A New Chapter in the North

When the pandemic led to the closure of his previous hotel in Bangkok, Chef Billy saw an opportunity to start fresh.

“I was offered the chance to join Meliá Chiang Mai, not as part of a big project, but as part of something meaningful,” he shared. “Up here, life moves slower. You feel more connected to the land, the ingredients, and the community. It’s shaped not just how I cook but how I see food.”

The local farmers and gardeners he works with continue to inspire him every day.

“They remind me that sustainability isn’t a trend. It’s a way of life.”

His Signature Dish – Mai’s Sampler

If you’ve ever dined at Meliá Chiang Mai, you’ll notice how each dish feels grounded yet inventive. Chef Billy describes his cooking style in three words: creative, sustainable, connected. He loves blending local northern ingredients with his Western culinary background to create dishes that are fresh, surprising, and deeply personal.

“A good kitchen should be like Chiang Mai — vibrant, diverse, and full of character,” he said. “I want my team to bring their own ideas and personality into every dish.”

One of his favorites? The black tail chicken, a rare local ingredient he revived in the form of a flavorful sausage, part of his signature MAI’s Samplers — a tasting plate featuring citrus tuna rolls, shrimp nets, spicy tomato relish, black tail chicken sausage, and caramelized pork with glutinous rice.

“Each component tells a story,” he said. “It’s about creativity, Thai roots, and connection. It’s my way of saying, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single bite.”

His inspiration always starts close to home, with seasonal herbs, indigenous vegetables, and northern spices.

“I love creating something new yet familiar, something that tells a story of both culture and season.”

Sustainability as a Way of Life

For Chef Billy, sustainability goes beyond buzzwords. “It’s not just about reducing waste,” Chef Billy explained. “For me, sustainability is about respect,” he added. “Respect for the farmers, the ingredients, the team, and our guests. We source locally, reduce waste, and work closely with small producers. Every dish should do good, not just taste good.”

At Meliá Chiang Mai, that philosophy comes alive through close partnerships with local producers, minimal food waste practices, and a farm-to-table mindset that puts authenticity first. “The people behind the ingredients inspire me the most,” he added. “Their dedication reminds me why I love what I do.”

Cooking from the Heart

When asked what he loves most about cooking, Chef Billy shares that, “It’s the connection. When guests come back not just to eat but to talk, to share stories — that’s when I know I’ve done something right,” he said. “Cooking is a conversation from the heart.”

Even when things get tough in the kitchen, he sees every challenge as an opportunity to grow.

“Every obstacle sharpens your skills. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

H.E. Mr. Danny Annan, the Ambassador of Denmark to Thailand, has completed his first year in Bangkok. With nearly 30 years of experience in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, his diplomatic journey reflects a career deeply rooted in international engagement and cross-cultural understanding.

Appointed in 2024, Ambassador Annan’s posting to Thailand follows an extensive series of assignments around the world. From 2020 to 2024, he served as the Ambassador of Denmark to Türkiye and Azerbaijan. Before that, he was Ambassador to Iran from 2015 to 2020. Earlier in his career, he held key leadership roles within the Ministry, including Deputy Director-General of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Department (2012–2015) and Deputy Director-General of the Africa Department (2011–2012).

His overseas assignments began in the late 1990s, taking him to various parts of the world. He was Deputy Head of Mission in Damascus (1999–2003), First Secretary in Beirut (2006–2007), and Deputy Head of Mission in New Delhi (2007–2011). He also served as Political Advisor to the Cease-Fire Monitoring Mission in Sri Lanka and held several senior positions in departments focusing on Russia, the Balkans, the European Union, and international legal affairs.

During his four years in New Delhi, he travelled extensively across India and described the experience of witnessing the country’s economic development and rich cultural diversity as remarkable.

Having spent most of his professional life outside Denmark, Ambassador Annan brings with him a wealth of experience in diplomacy, international cooperation, and intercultural dialogue. His first year in Thailand marks the continuation of a long career dedicated to fostering understanding between nations.

After finishing high school in Thailand, Nikon moved to the U.S. to study business at American University. This groundedness allows them to navigate uncertainty with more calm, curiosity, and openness. “It’s not about avoiding challenges,” he adds. “It’s about discovering a steadiness that isn’t dependent on circumstances.”

Rethinking Burnout and the “Always-On” Culture

In today’s high-performance work environments—especially in expat circles—burnout is a familiar foe. But Nikon offers a refreshing perspective: burnout isn’t about doing too much. It’s about how we think about what we do.

“People don’t burn out from work itself,” he says. “They burn out from the pressure they place on themselves.”

He describes burnout as an impersonal message from the mind—a signal to slow down. “It’s like seeing a road sign that tells you to reduce your speed. You don’t take it personally. You adjust.”

When people begin to relate to their mind differently, the need to always be “on” starts to fade—and with it, the stress that comes from overthinking.

Rediscovering Direction in Uncertain Times

For those who feel lost—even if they appear successful on the outside—Nikon offers a gentle reminder: look inward. “You already have a compass,” he says. “It’s your inner wisdom, your quiet knowing. The more you listen to it, the clearer things become.”

Challenges, Wins, and the Power of Patience

Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth. “Banking systems, language barriers, even setting up a company—it was all new,” Ashutosh admits. “But I learned early on: listen more than you speak. Find local partners. Be willing to unlearn.”

That mindset paid off. In his first year in Thailand, he secured 20 website clients and built a full business infrastructure—including a registered trademark and local banking. “Those early wins gave me the confidence that this wasn’t just a detour. It was the destination.”

Balance Beyond the Screen

Living abroad and running a fast-growing business can be overwhelming. For Ashutosh, staying grounded is essential. “Balance comes from structure. I make time to walk around a market, try street food, or cook something new. That’s how I recharge.”

When asked what he loves most about life in Thailand, his answer is simple: “The small things. A good iced coffee. A last-minute island trip. A conversation with a stranger who becomes a friend. That’s the magic here.”

What Success Really Looks Like

Almost 600 Hong Kong-based self-taught artists and recent art graduates within the first 10 years of their art career have applied for the second annual art prize, more than double the number of applicants for the inaugural 2023 art prize.

The winner and two runners-up of the 2025 art prize will be revealed during a special ceremony at The Hari Hong Kong on March 13 this year to a backdrop of selected artwork crafted by finalists. The winner will receive a HK$100,000 cash award generously donated by Dr. Aron Harilela, CEO and chairman of Harilela Hotels Limited and founder of The Hari Hong Kong and its sister property The Hari London.

The shortlisted artists are APO, Chan Ka Kiu, YY Chan, Dony Cheng Hung, Itit Cheung (Weera it Ittiteerarak), Gianluca Crudele, Ho Hou Wun, Inkgo Lam, Vincent Lee, Jeremy Leung, Livy Leung Hoi Nga, Edwin Lo, Karen Mai, Geoffrey Palmer, Amy Tang, Gavin Tu, Nicole Wong, Wu Jiaru, and Angela Yuen Ka Yee.

In addition to Dr Harilela, the prize’s esteemed judging panel features A Space For Art’s founder and director Charlie Smedley, TASCHEN’s Asia retail director Frankie Ho, Ben Brown Fine Arts’ managing director Amanda Hon and independent curator Anqi Li.

“We are blown away by the imagination, the narratives, the substance and the depth evident in the talented finalists’ submissions; Hong Kong’s art scene has never been more exciting and inspiring,” said Dr Harilela.

He said the call for all genres and mediums of artwork “has been well and truly answered and then some”. “There are wondrous things happening among the finalists’ broad spectrum of work with clay, oil on canvas and linen, watercolours, porcelain, red earthenware, acrylic on wood panels and Chinese silk, lenticular print, film photography, videos, installations, mixed media with upcycled materials and vintage objects, and so much more,” he said.

“For example, there’s a digital print on a lightbox fronted by venetian blinds. Etching on stainless steel mirror. A suncatcher made of glass and Opalite. A hammerhead shark made of disposable cutlery. A circular urban acoustic barrier with a built-in community garden and insect hotel, designed to combat noise and create a quiet zone for the hearing impaired and neurodivergent. We could go on and on and the judging panel is of the opinion that the concepts and execution of all the finalists’ works are flawless.”

“The talent and dedication of this year’s applicants are truly remarkable, showcasing the strength of Hong Kong’s art scene. It reaffirms the city’s status as a global art capital – one that will continue to thrive for years to come,” Mr Smedley added.

The French-based MICHELIN Guide, famed for its accreditation of “stars” to the most exquisite restaurants, has for the first time introduced a ranking system of “keys” to acclaim the most outstanding hotels in the world.

The 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Thailand included a total of eight Three-Key hotels (its highest decoration), 19 Two-Key hotels, and 31 One Key hotels. Each hotel had been anonymously visited and assessed by MICHELIN inspectors. Banyan Tree Krabi was among only four resorts or hotels in the Krabi region decorated with a key award.

According to the MICHELIN Guide, distinction is based on five criteria: excellence in architecture and design; quality of service; overall personality and character; value for money; and meaningful contributions to the local community.

In addition, the prestigious French-based guide also recommended the resort’s spa, Banyan Tree Spa Krabi, as one of the seven “most luxurious” spas in Thailand.

On Friday September 6 and Saturday September 7 this year, the Madrid-born chef, who oversees INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit’s signature LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar, will take over Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa’s seafront restaurant Big Fish & Bar to orchestrate a four-course feast with optional wine pairing.

He honed his craft in some of Spain’s finest kitchens, working at one Michelin-starred Saddle as well as Diverxo, recognized in the top three ‘World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ in 2023, and acclaimed restaurants El Jardin De La Marquina and Montellen. His decade-long experience as a chef includes stints at restaurants Puerta 57, Café Pino, Restaurante La Chans and Rios De Luz, and hotels including Morlans Hotels and Globales Don Pedro in Mallorca.

To be held from 6pm onwards and priced at THB 3,500++ per couple for food only or THB 4,900++ per couple including a full wine pairing, the “Taste of Spain” dinners will feature Chef Racionero’s most popular dishes at LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar.

The dinner starts out with appetizers such as traditional jamón croquettes, lime-smoked sardine with Pipirrana salad, pani puri with cured Hamachi sashimi and roasted peppers, and crispy layered potato with truffled egg yolk and Idiazabal cheese.

Organisers leverage Thai soft power to grow number of international participants

The Laguna Phuket Marathon Presented by Supersports is set to welcome over 10,000 runners and visitors from more than 40 countries to the tropical island of Phuket to compete in what has become Southeast Asia’s favourite destination marathon. Held 8-9 June, 2024 at Laguna Phuket, the award-winning marathon is one of the longest-running international sports events on Phuket and is driving the island’s resurgence as a world-class sports tourism destination.

Expected to contribute hundreds of millions of baht to the island’s tourism economy through accommodation bookings, food and beverage spend, and more, the Laguna Phuket Marathon Presented by Supersports –  which is famous for its family-friendly atmosphere, world-class standard and warm Thai hospitality – is a showcase of Thailand’s soft power, and is seeing a surge in interest amongst international participants.

“Since the very first event 18 years ago, Laguna Phuket Marathon has always appealed to Thai and international runners and this year we are seeing a surge in international interest, especially from Asia-Pacific countries. Our top five international participating countries for 2024 are Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom,” said Mr. Raimund Wellenhofer, Race Director, GAA Events, organizer of the Laguna Phuket Marathon Presented by Supersports. “It’s also encouraging to see a good mix of new faces and returnees. From children and families to age-groupers and top talent across Thailand and from overseas, the event attracts all demographics and it’s great to see many people staying on in Phuket to vacation afterwards.”

With a nod to the island’s robust recovery and its sea dragon protector, Hai Leng Ong, marathon organisers are inspiring people to exercise and live a healthier lifestyle with this year’s event theme, “Awake Your Inner Dragon”.

The picture-postcard course passes the stunning beaches of Nai Yang, Layan and Bang Tao and also takes runners through local villages and lush tropical landscapes. The popular two day format sees the 2km kids run, 5km and 10km take place on the morning of Saturday 8th June, and the Half Marathon (21.0975km), Marathon Relay (42.195km) and Marathon (42.195km) on the morning of Sunday 9th June.

Mrs. Somsong has worked in the tourism business for more than 50 years with a long list of achievements to her name, including being the Vice President of the Tourism Council of Thailand, the Vice President of the ITCC, the Executive Director of the Thai-Sri-Lanka Chamber of Commerce, committee member of Tourism Awards of Tourism Authority of Thailand, and she received the Iron Lady of the Travel Industry by Thai Airways International and Amadeus System for 16 years. H.E. General Prayut Chan-O-Cha, PM of Thailand, appointed Somsong as the Honourable Proficient Specialist in the Committee of National Tourism Policy.

Mrs. Somsong was born in 1948 in Singburi Province, Thailand. She pursued her education in Bangkok before marrying Sutham Sachaphimukh (Raj Sachdev), former president of ITCC, IAT, ITA, and Rotary Club of Bangrak.
