Chiang Rai, Thailand — His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty Queen Suthida have graciously granted royal patronage to Mr. Vernon Harry Unsworth, the British cave explorer widely known for his crucial role in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue mission in Chiang Rai Province.
The royal patronage was conferred in recognition of Mr. Unsworth’s extraordinary dedication and humanitarian service to Thailand during one of the nation’s most challenging rescue operations.
On October 7, 2025, Their Majesties accepted Mr. Unsworth, who is currently being treated for pneumonia at Mae Chan Hospital in Chiang Rai, as a patient under royal patronage. Under this royal care, his medical treatment will be supported by the monarchy. Representatives from the Royal Volunteer Center and local officials visited the hospital to convey the royal goodwill and ensure that Mr. Unsworth receives the best possible care.
Hospital sources confirmed that Mr. Unsworth remains under close observation and is able to communicate with those around him. He has expressed deep gratitude for the royal compassion, describing the honor as both humbling and deeply moving.
Mr. Unsworth has spent several years exploring the Tham Luang–Khun Nam Nang Non National Park, gaining extensive knowledge of its complex cave system. His expertise proved invaluable during the 2018 rescue of the Wild Boars youth football team and their coach, who were trapped for more than two weeks. His coordination with Thai authorities and international divers was instrumental in shaping the strategy that ultimately led to the safe evacuation of all thirteen individuals.
