Thailand and Cambodia Sign Historic Peace Declaration at ASEAN Summit

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Thailand and Cambodia have signed the Thailand–Cambodia Peace Declaration during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, underscoring strong international support for peace and cooperation in Southeast Asia.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet jointly signed the declaration, which includes four key provisions aimed at strengthening peace and stability along the shared border.

The Thailand–Cambodia Peace Declaration commits both nations to:

  1. Withdraw heavy weapons from border areas;

  2. Clear landmines and unexploded ordnance;

  3. Conduct joint efforts to suppress scam-related crimes; and

  4. Develop cooperative management of overlapping territorial zones to prevent future conflicts.

The agreement marks a new chapter in bilateral relations, emphasizing mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and collaboration on shared challenges.

ASEAN–U.S. Summit Highlights Regional Cooperation

Earlier on the same day, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, represented Prime Minister Anutin at the 13th ASEAN–U.S. Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The meeting acknowledged the U.S.’s constructive role in supporting peace, stability, and prosperity through ASEAN-led mechanisms aligned with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

Leaders adopted the ASEAN–U.S. Leaders’ Joint Vision Statement to Promote Stronger, Safer, and More Prosperous ASEAN and America, reinforcing cooperation in security, economic, social, and cultural areas.

Mr. Sihasak emphasized the strategic importance of ASEAN–U.S. cooperation in maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific, highlighting the need to enhance partnerships in the digital economy, education, youth exchanges, and efforts to combat transnational crimes, including online scams and drug trafficking.

Thailand Reaffirms Support for United Nations and Sustainable Development

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Prime Minister Anutin congratulated the United Nations on its 80th anniversary and reaffirmed Thailand’s continued support for the UN80 Initiative and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

He also exchanged views with the UN Secretary-General on regional matters, including the situation in Myanmar and the Thailand–Cambodia border, stressing peaceful resolutions and stronger cooperation to address cybercrime and related cross-border challenges.
