20-Year-Old Princess Leonor Set to Become Spain’s First Queen in 150 Years

Spain is heading toward a major royal milestone. Princess Leonor, now 20 years old, is next in line to the throne and when she becomes queen, she’ll be the first woman to rule Spain in her own right in more than 150 years.

The last time Spain had a reigning queen was in the 1800s, during the rule of Queen Isabella II. Since then, the crown has only been passed down through male monarchs, making Leonor’s future reign especially historic.

Who Is Princess Leonor?

Princess Leonor is the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Born in 2005, she has been the heir to the throne since birth. She also has a younger sister, Infanta Sofía.

Her mother, Queen Letizia, was once a journalist before marrying into the royal family—a background that helped bring a more modern image to Spain’s monarchy. That same modern approach is often linked to Leonor, who has grown up with a strong focus on education, responsibility, and public duty.

Why Her Future Reign Matters

Spain’s monarchy was restored in 1975 after the end of General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. King Juan Carlos I later played a major role in guiding the country toward democracy before stepping down in 2014. The crown then passed to his son, King Felipe VI.

Princess Leonor now represents the next generation of royal leadership. Her future reign is widely seen as a fresh chapter—one that respects tradition while reflecting modern Spain.

Preparing for the Crown

Becoming queen isn’t just ceremonial. By law, Spain’s future monarch must complete military training with the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Leonor has already begun this process.

After finishing her International Baccalaureate studies in Wales, she started formal military training in Spain. She has trained on land, at sea, and in the air as part of her preparation to eventually serve as Commander-in-Chief of Spain’s Armed Forces.

Leonor also speaks several languages, including Spanish, Catalan, English, and French, highlighting Spain’s cultural diversity and global connections.
