Celebrate tradition, sustainability, and community this November in the heart of Thailand
Bangkok is once again lighting up the night sky for one of Thailand’s most beautiful festivals — Loy Krathong 2025, which falls on November 5, 2025. This year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is encouraging locals, travelers, and expats alike to celebrate the festival in a more sustainable and mindful way, under the theme of “Eco-Friendly Loy Krathong.”
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time resident, this is the perfect chance to experience one of Thailand’s most magical traditions — floating your krathong (a small floating basket) on the water as a symbol of gratitude, forgiveness, and new beginnings.
Celebrate Tradition While Caring for the Planet
The BMA is promoting the concept of “Five Free Loy Krathong,” focused on reducing pollution and ensuring public safety:
-
No bread krathongs – Floating bread baskets in public park ponds is prohibited to protect aquatic life.
-
Use natural materials only – Choose biodegradable krathongs made from banana leaves, flowers, or coconut shells.
-
Reduce air pollution – Celebrate close to home and avoid incense burning or excessive travel.
-
No fireworks or sky lanterns – Help keep the skies and city safe.
-
Stay safe by the water – Be mindful when floating krathongs at piers or riverbanks.
In previous years, the use of bread krathongs caused water contamination and harm to fish populations, particularly in Bangkok’s public parks. This year’s eco-conscious approach ensures that everyone can take part in the festival while helping to protect the environment.
Where to Celebrate Loy Krathong in Bangkok
Bangkok will open 33 public parks for the celebration, offering peaceful and scenic spaces for everyone to float their krathongs. Popular spots include Lumphini Park, Benjakitti Park, and Chatuchak Park, each offering a calm setting away from the city buzz.
For those looking to enjoy the festivities along the river, ICONSIAM and the Chao Phraya Riverfront will once again be among the city’s most stunning Loy Krathong destinations, with illuminated river views, cultural performances, and photo-perfect moments.
Try Floating a Krathong Online
Can’t make it to the river? Bangkok’s sustainability initiative also includes an online Loy Krathong option via the Greener Bangkok website. From 5:00 a.m. to midnight on November 5, participants can choose a virtual krathong design, select a park or river location, and make a wish — all online. It’s a creative, eco-conscious way to join in the celebration from anywhere in the world.
A Festival That Brings People Together
Loy Krathong, often called the “Festival of Lights,” is one of Thailand’s most enchanting and photogenic celebrations — a night filled with candlelight, reflection, and unity. By promoting sustainable practices, Bangkok is ensuring that this beloved tradition continues to shine brightly for generations to come.
So whether you’re living in Bangkok or visiting during this festive season, join the celebration and help make Loy Krathong 2025 a greener, cleaner, and more meaningful experience.
