Bangkok’s relationship with the Chao Phraya River is about to gain a new chapter. A planned pedestrian and cycling bridge across the river is in the works, promising not only improved connectivity but a fresh way to experience one of the capital’s most iconic waterways.
Developed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the bridge will span a section of the river between Phra Pok Klao Bridge and Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Maharat Bridge, linking Songwad Road in Sampanthawong with Chiang Mai Road in Khlong San. The project is currently progressing through detailed design and environmental review, with planning expected to be finalised within the year.
Connecting Two Historic River Communities

The location is far from incidental. Songwad Road sits at the heart of one of Bangkok’s oldest commercial districts, long shaped by river trade and multicultural influences. Across the water, Khlong San has emerged as a dynamic mix of heritage neighbourhoods and modern developments.
By creating a direct pedestrian link between these two areas, the bridge aims to encourage movement across the river that doesn’t depend on ferries or road traffic. For residents, commuters, and visitors, it offers a more relaxed and scenic alternative—one that invites exploration rather than urgency.
Designed for People, Not Just Passage

Unlike traditional river crossings built purely for efficiency, this bridge is being designed with public life in mind. Walkers and cyclists will share the space, and the structure itself is intended to function as an open-air vantage point over the Chao Phraya.
The idea is to turn the crossing into an experience: a place to pause, take photos, watch boats pass below, and reconnect with the river that has shaped Bangkok for centuries. In doing so, the bridge supports a broader push toward people-centred urban design and more liveable waterfront spaces.
Balancing Progress with Preservation
Environmental and cultural sensitivity are central to the project’s planning. Ongoing assessments are examining potential impacts on river ecology, navigation routes, and safety, while also ensuring the bridge respects the surrounding historic cityscape.
