The high-level meeting brought together Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of the European Council António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for wide-ranging discussions covering political, economic, and strategic cooperation. The leaders reviewed the full scope of India–EU relations and explored concrete steps to fast-track collaboration across priority sectors.

A central outcome of the summit was the successful conclusion of negotiations on the long-awaited India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), widely seen as a game-changer for bilateral trade and investment. Once implemented, the agreement is expected to open new markets, enhance supply chain resilience, and create fresh opportunities for businesses on both sides.

Beyond trade, the leaders adopted a new long-term policy roadmap titled “Towards 2030: India–EU Joint Comprehensive Strategic Agenda.” This framework sets the direction for cooperation over the next five years and beyond, focusing on sustainable growth, innovation, and shared global responsibilities.

Key agreements and decisions from the summit include:

  • The formal conclusion of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations

  • Adoption of a comprehensive strategic agenda guiding cooperation until 2030

  • Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on a structured framework for mobility, aimed at easing movement for students, skilled professionals, and researchers

  • Finalization of a dedicated Security and Defence Partnership to strengthen collaboration in regional and global security matters

Discussions during the summit also highlighted cooperation in clean energy and climate action, digital transformation and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure connectivity, research and innovation, and workforce development.

Leaders on both sides emphasized that these outcomes are designed to strengthen economic growth, support job creation, enhance manufacturing and services, and reinforce national and regional security. Particular attention was given to facilitating people-to-people exchanges, especially in education, skills, and research.

Reaffirming shared democratic values, the leaders underscored that the India–EU partnership is rooted in common goals of peace, prosperity, and stability—not only for their citizens, but also for the wider global community.

With these landmark decisions, the 16th India–EU Summit stands as a defining moment, positioning the partnership as a key force in shaping global economic and strategic cooperation in the years ahead.
