Irish Whiskey Earns Geographical Indication (GI) Status in Thailand

Irish Whiskey has officially been recognised in Thailand as a Geographical Indication (GI) by the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce.

In simple terms, this means Thailand now formally protects Irish Whiskey as a product that can only come from a specific place and follow specific traditions. It’s a big step for quality assurance and a proud moment for Irish heritage on the global stage.

Why This Matters

GI status helps protect products that are closely tied to where they come from. For consumers, it’s reassurance that what’s in the bottle is authentic. For producers, it protects generations of hard work, knowledge, and tradition.

With this approval, Irish Whiskey becomes the 25th foreign product and the 11th product from the European Union to receive GI protection in Thailand—placing it among a respected group of internationally recognised goods.

What Makes Irish Whiskey Special?

It Comes From the Island of Ireland

Only whiskey distilled on the island of Ireland—including both Ireland and Northern Ireland—can be called Irish Whiskey under this protection.

It’s Built on Centuries of Know-How

Irish whiskey-making dates back to around the 6th century. Over time, distillers have passed down skills and methods that still shape how the spirit is made today.

Nature Plays a Big Role

Ireland’s mild climate and natural water sources are key to the whiskey’s character. By law, it must be aged for at least three years, giving it that smooth, easy-to-drink style people love.

Smooth, Balanced, and Easy to Enjoy

Irish Whiskey is known for its gentle texture, balanced flavours, and warm golden colour—ranging from light gold to deep amber.

A Stronger Connection Between Ireland and Thailand

This recognition isn’t just about whiskey. It also reflects growing cooperation between Thailand, Ireland, and the European Union, especially when it comes to trade, culture, and protecting traditional products.

As Thai consumers continue to explore premium spirits, this move helps ensure they’re getting the real thing—made the right way, in the right place.

A Toast to Tradition

With GI status now in place, Irish Whiskey’s story is better protected than ever. It’s a win for heritage, craftsmanship, and anyone who enjoys a well-made drink with a bit of history behind it.

Cheers to that.
