Representing India among 9 participating nations, the traditional masked dance from Jharkhand shines on the global stage in Loei Province, Thailand.
Loei Province, Thailand — The vibrant rhythms and dramatic movements of Purulia Chhau, a traditional Indian masked dance from Jharkhand, captivated audiences at the Thailand International Mask Carnival 2025, held at Naga Kanha Gotama Plaza in Loei Province.
The 9-member troupe, led by Mr. Prabhat Kumar Mahto, represented India in both the opening ceremony and the highly anticipated International Mask Parade, alongside performers from eight other countries—China, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and host nation Thailand.
Their performance, marked by powerful storytelling, colorful costumes, and synchronized choreography, offered a glimpse into India’s rich cultural heritage and received wide appreciation from an international audience.
The event was inaugurated with opening remarks by Mr. Pailin Limcharoen, Deputy Governor of Loei Province, who welcomed participating nations and emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy and creative exchange. Also present was Dr. Chaitanya Prakash Yogi, Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) at the Embassy of India, Bangkok.
The Thailand International Mask Carnival is a major cultural celebration that brings together traditional masked dance and theater from across Asia and beyond, highlighting shared histories, folklore, and artistic practices.
India’s participation through the SVCC, under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), reflects the strengthening of India–Thailand cultural ties, and reinforces the role of traditional arts in fostering cross-cultural understanding.
