Thailand Is Updating Its Visa Rules — How Will This Make Travel Easier?

Thailand is set to adjust visa-free stays for visitors from 93 countries from 60 days to 30 days. Officials say most tourists stay less than a month, so travel plans shouldn’t be affected.

Natthriya Thaweevong, Permanent Secretary of Tourism and Sports, explained the change aims to prevent visa misuse and illegal activities. “If visitors want to stay longer than 30 days, they can apply for an extension as usual,” she said.

The visa-free program, launched in 2024, initially boosted arrivals from China, Taiwan, and India. Travel operators support the change, noting it promotes safety while keeping Thailand accessible for genuine tourists.

The Thai Cabinet has long approved a broader plan to streamline and modernize Thailand’s visa system, aimed at boosting tourism and the economy. The measures, effective since 28 May 2024, are divided into three phases:

  1. Short-term measures: Visitors from 93 countries can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism, short-term work, or business, staying up to 60 days. Nationals from 31 countries can also apply for a Visa on Arrival (VOA). The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) attracts digital nomads, high-quality tourists, and those interested in cultural activities.

  2. Medium-term measures: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs simplified non-immigrant visas, reducing categories from 17 to seven. e-Visa services have expanded to 94 Thai embassies and consulates worldwide since 1 January 2025.

  3. Long-term measures: The Immigration Bureau launched the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TM.6) to replace the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, effective 1 May 2025. Future updates include adding eight more countries to VOA eligibility and revising visa rules for elderly retirees.

Tourists planning longer stays can still apply for visa extensions or alternative visas, keeping Thailand safe, welcoming, and easy to visit.
