Bangkok, Thailand – Thailand is preparing for one of its busiest travel periods of the year as the Songkran holiday approaches. This year, the Ministry of Transport has unveiled nationwide measures designed to make travel safer, smoother, and more convenient for both domestic and international visitors.
From April 10 to 19, authorities are rolling out a comprehensive campaign aimed at reducing road accidents, easing congestion, and improving the overall travel experience across the country.
Free Toll Access and Roadside Support
As part of the initiative, selected expressways and motorways will offer free toll access for up to seven days, while additional routes will be temporarily opened to reduce congestion during peak travel times. Free vehicle inspections will be available at multiple locations nationwide, complemented by roadside assistance units, service centers, and rest areas.
Traffic management measures include suspending road construction, enhancing road lighting, monitoring high-risk areas, and restricting truck movement during peak hours. These steps are intended to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities on major routes by at least 5 percent compared with previous years.
Public Transport Measures for a Smoother Journey
Public transportation services are also being expanded to meet growing demand during the holiday. Transport Co., Ltd. will operate around 7,000 bus trips per day, with capacity to carry up to 180,000 passengers daily while maintaining fare rates until April 19. Outbound travel from April 9 to 12 is expected to see 160,000–180,000 passengers per day, while return trips from April 16 to 19 are projected at approximately 120,000 passengers daily.
To prevent overcrowding, 1,200 additional buses will be deployed. Northern and northeastern routes during peak evening hours will depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, while same-day supplementary services will continue from Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal.
Coordinated Safety Measures Across All Modes
Authorities have coordinated efforts with the Department of Land Transport, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, the State Railway of Thailand, and police units. Safety measures include:
- Vehicle inspections and maintenance checks
- Alcohol and drug testing for drivers
- Mandatory rest periods for long-distance trips
- Speed limits capped at 90 km/h, with two drivers assigned for long routes
Additional services for travellers include free parking at Suvarnabhumi Airport, free shuttle buses, and complimentary public transport for elderly passengers on selected systems. Fuel supplies and public service support are also being monitored to ensure uninterrupted travel.
