An infant Sumatran elephant had been reported dead after losing half of his trunk by a trap placed by poachers in Indonesia.
The Critically Endangered (CR) calf, aged one year old, was abandoned by its group as the animal was captured in the snare trap.
The baby elephant was spotted by villagers within the Aceh Jaya Town and was then transported to a conservation agency to be medicated.
According to the conversation administrators stated that they attempted to rescue the life of the elephant by amputating its trunk although it had caved in to an infection caused by its wounds two days after.
Head Agus Arianto of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency stated that the conservation agency could not save the elephant since its injury is serious and is infected, adding that the agency had done everything to help tt.
Relatively, the Sumatran elephant is deemed to be a critically endangered species because of the fast rates of forest clearance in its natural habitat in Borneo and Sumatra islands.
