Location and History
Located atop an extinct volcano in Buriram Province, Thailand, Phanom Rung Historical Park stands as a testament to the region’s rich Khmer Empire history. Constructed between the 10th and 13th centuries, this Hindu temple complex was dedicated to Lord Shiva and served as a symbolic representation of Mount Kailash, his heavenly abode.
Architectural Marvel
The park’s layout is a masterpiece of ancient architecture, showcasing intricate designs and meticulous planning. As you approach the main temple, you’ll pass through a processional walkway bordered by sandstone posts, leading to three majestic naga bridges. These bridges, adorned with five-headed serpents, symbolize the connection between heaven and earth.
Sacred Spaces
The temple complex includes various structures, such as the White Elephant House, believed to be where royalty changed attire before rituals. The main sanctuary features stunning carvings and icons, including the famous Phra Narai Lintel depicting a reclining Vishnu. Other notable structures include two brick sanctuaries, a minor sanctuary with a sandstone altar, and two Bannalais used as libraries for holy scriptures.
Restoration and Recognition
In 1971, the Thai Department of Fine Arts embarked on a 17-year restoration project to preserve Phanom Rung’s original grandeur. The park was officially opened in 1988 and nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005, highlighting its cultural significance and historical value.
Light Phenomenon
One of the most intriguing aspects of Phanom Rung is its alignment with the sun. Four times a year, during the equinoxes and solstices, the rising or setting sun shines through all 15 gates inside the temple, creating a breathtaking light phenomenon that draws visitors from around the world.
