The Importance of Being Earnest is a play about the truth, or the lack thereof. Jack (Kate Prior) may be Jack in the country, but when in town, he goes by the name of Ernest to court the object of his affection, Gwendolen (Severin Herbert). His terribly unserious friend, Algernon (Jessica Zaugg), is just as two-faced, using a lie to get close to Jack’s cousin, Cecily (John Clark). So when the truth comes knocking, and their performative lives are quite exploded, they begin to wonder if being Ernest might just be more trouble than it’s worth – especially when their paramours prove to be much more interested in the aesthetic of the lie.
Directed by Ricardo R. L. Hizon, assisted directed by Nabila Malik, and with musical direction by Marek Sison, The Importance of Being Earnest by BCT is set to be a witty, high-energy twist on the classic and sure to leave you pondering the true importance of being “Earnest”.
