COVID Cases in India surge as the Year Opens

India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reported an increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 5, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 58,097 new cases reported across India. They also reported a total of 15389 additional recovered cases and 534 deaths for the past 24 hours.

India is currently facing a fresh wave of COVID cases and new variants have mutated and continue to spread. Maharashtra leads with 10401 new cases followed by Mumbai with 10860 cases. The cumulative total raised the country’s positivity rate to 4.18%.

In a bid to contain the spread of the virus, local governments have imposed curfews to minimize travel. This would hopefully slow the spread of the virus. Delhi, one of the major metro cities has imposed a weekend curfew shutting down all non-essential shops and services. Over the weekends permitted transport capacity is approved at 50% of the total seats.

In Karnataka, the state has also imposed a two-week weekend curfew in addition to their existing night curfew. The government also decided to shut schools and pre-university classes with the exemption for 10th and 12th standard students.

The country now faces a huge demand for RT-PCR tests kits. This comes after the government announces a mandate for all international passengers to take the test upon arriving at the airport. Domestic demand has also risen for the said rapid tests kits. This has sparked fear among health officials that many cases may go unreported.
