Ex-police officers loses a civil lawsuit filed against them for the death of George Floyd. In May 2020, George Floyd was arrested by four police officers. During the arrest, Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground with his knees on Floyd’s neck. As he was begging for his life, none of the police officers bothered to give him some air. He passed away on the spot.
This has fueled anger across the nation, police were supposed to be the protectors, not bullies. They also were slammed for the way they have treated people of color. The trial unfolded in front of Americans. Derek Chauvin was found guilty of George Floyd’s death.
Today, more justice has been served as the three remaining police officers were found guilty. They were charged with “deliberate indifference to [Mr. Floyd’s] serious medical needs”. Tou Thao, 36, J Alexander Kueng, 28, and Thomas Lane, 38 were found guilty.
They had minutes to respond to Loyd’s pleas, not seconds, the prosecutors argue. The defense said that they could not disobey their superior. They sighted that the clients did ask Derek to loosen it up but he did not heed. In addition, Derek was a 19-year veteran, they trust in his ability to judge a situation.
After 13 hours of deliberation, the verdict came as “guilty”. They will be back in court for sentencing. The harshest punishment they could have is life in prison or the death penalty.
