INDIA COVID Cases Update as of February 2, 2022

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported a decrease in COVID cases since yesterday. As of February 2, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 161,068 new cases reported across India.

Kerala has reported 51,887 cases followed by Tamil Nandu registering 16,069 cases, and Maharashtra stands at 14,372 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly lower than yesterday’s and below the 200,000 mark that was previously reported.

This is the third day that the cases have fallen below 200,000. Despite the decline in cases, public precaution is still advised. Social Distancing, vaccination, and wearing masks is still recommended.

Omicron variant BA. 2 is now found in 57 countries. WHO announced the update yesterday. They also noted that this variant could be more infectious than the previous version. During their weekly epidemiological update, the World Health Organization said that the variant, which accounts for over 93 percent of all coronavirus specimens collected in the past month, counts several sub-lineages: BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 and BA.3. There has been a clear rise in cases involving BA.2, which counts several different mutations from the original. Mutations include on the spike protein that dots the virus’s surface and is key to entering human cells.

The UN health agency said little was known yet about the differences between the sub-variants, and called for studies into its characteristics, including its transmissibility, how good it is at dodging immune protections, and its virulence.
