The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported a slight increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of February 3, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 167,148 new cases reported across India.
Kerala has reported 52,199 cases followed by Karnataka registering 20,505 cases, and Maharashtra stands at 18,067 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly higher than yesterday’s but below the 200,000 mark that was previously reported.
This is the fourth day that the cases have fallen below 200,000. Despite the decline in cases, public precaution is still advised. Social Distancing, vaccination, and wearing masks is still recommended.
Delhi’s government is looking to ease restrictions after a steady decline in cases. This means that shops could open for an extended period of time. Also, the weekend curfew could be lifted. Delhi Disaster Management Authority will be having a meeting on Friday to evaluate the curbs.
Kerala continues to see an increase in cases which would prompt an extension of the COVID measures. The steady rise is mainly due to the omicron variant.
A new variant is being closely monitored. Omicron sub-lineage BA. 2 is looking more contagious but not deadly. As of the moment, it infects about 1 in 20 citizens in the UK. So far, 52 countries have reported the presence of the mutation in their cases. Further studies are ongoing on the efficacy of vaccines as well as the virology of the lineage.
