The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported an increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 23, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 332,530 new cases reported across India.
Maharashtra has reported 46,393 cases followed by Kerala registering 45,136 cases, and Karnataka stands at 42,470 cases at this time. This is the fifth day that the cases crossed the 300,000 mark in a while.
The omicron variant appears to be the dominant variant. INSACOG stated “Omicron is now in community transmission in India and has become dominant in multiple metros where new cases have been rising exponentially. BA.2 lineage is in a substantial fraction in India and S gene dropout based screening is likely to give high false negatives.”
“Further spread of Omicron in India is now expected to be through internal transmission, not foreign travelers,” they further stated. In line with this, they are working to revise surveillance strategies to adjust to the dynamic nature of the virus.
