INDIA COVID Cases Update as of January 24, 2022

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported an increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 24, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 306,404 new cases reported across India.

Karnataka has reported 50,210 cases followed by Kerala registering 45,449 cases, and Maharashtra stands at 40,805 cases at this time. This is the sixth day that the cases crossed the 300,000 mark in a while.

It is the first time that Karnatak overtook Maharashtra as the state with the most cases. Now that the omicron variant is on a domestic transmission stage, the virus spreads among the population. Although the symptoms are mild, WHO still urges the community to stay vigilant.

As the country battles its most recent wave, the government is encouraging the population to get vaccinated. The decision to make vaccination mandatory has sparked some controversy. Awaken India Movement (AIM) held a freedom rally protesting that “vaccine should be an individual’s choice”. This is no surprise as many around the world share their view.

Over the weekend, protests in Europe, the USA, and even in the UK have sprung up. Many took to the streets to fight the laws to make vaccinations mandatory. Many felt that there is a new divide in terms of the privileges of a vaccinated individual versus a non-vaccinated one.
