The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported an increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 26, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 285,721 new cases reported across India.
Kerala has reported 55,457 cases followed by Karnataka registering 41,400 cases, and Maharashtra stands at 33,924 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly higher than yesterday’s but below the 300,00 that was previously reported.
Kerala has reported a record-breaking one-day case total of 55,457. The sequencing is ongoing on which variant is more dominant in the sudden surge of cases.
India is now facing the challenge of the third wave. Many experts say that the cases could peak in the first week of February. The Omicron variant is currently dominant and is on community circulation. Experts advise to keep social distancing, masks and ensure vaccination to contain the spread.
Although the virus symptoms remain to be mild, many doctors around the world still advise the public to be vigilant. Among the main concerns of virologists is that the variant could mutate into something more contagious or deadly.
At the moment both Delta and Omicron variants are in circulation in the community.
