INDIA COVID Cases Update as of January 31, 2022

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported a decrease in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 31, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 176,416 new cases reported across India.

Kerala has reported 51,570 cases followed by Karnataka registering 28,264 cases, and Tamil Nandu stands at 22,238 cases at this time. Today’s number is significantly lower than yesterday’s and below the 200,000 mark that was previously reported.

This is the first day that the cases have fallen below 200,000. This could mean that the cases have peaked and will continue to decline. Even though the cases seem to recede, public precaution is still advised. Social Distancing, vaccination, and wearing masks is still recommended.

The significant decline in cases could be a positive sign. There are no reassurances at the moment due to the use of home testing kits. These results are not registered or counted in the system. This has been one of the concerns of health officials. They are worried since ATK tests is in high demand but not recorded as cases.

Since the virus is on community transmission, it means its spreading within the community. Outside influence is not required to spread it. Studies also show that omicron can survive on surfaces for up to 8 days. This accounts for its high transmission rate. Another concern is that as the virus continues to spread, it can still mutate. The mutation might result in a more contagious or deadlier version of the virus.
