Kolkata to Thailand: An Epic Road Trip Coming in 2027

In a thrilling development for adventure enthusiasts and travel aficionados, the dream of embarking on an epic road trip from Kolkata to Thailand is set to become a reality by 2027. During a recent business conclave organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), commerce ministers from several nations discussed this exciting prospect, centering their attention on the Trilateral Highway that will seamlessly connect the two vibrant cities.

This ambitious endeavor is an integral part of The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) project and is slated for completion within the next four years.

The Path Less Traveled

The proposed plan outlines the route of the Trilateral Highway, commencing in the heart of Bangkok and journeying through the picturesque landscapes of Sukhothai and Mae Sot in Thailand. The highway will then cross over into Myanmar, a land of mystique and wonder, passing through key cities such as Yangon, Mandalay, Kalewa, and Tamu, before finally reaching the Indian subcontinent. In India, the highway is anticipated to traverse Moreh, Kohima, Guwahati, Srirampur, and Siliguri, culminating its journey in the bustling city of Kolkata.

Spanning a staggering 2,800 kilometers, the Trilateral Highway promises an unforgettable road trip experience.

The Waiting Game

The remarkable journey will be dominated by Indian roads, making it one of the longest stretches of the highway, while Thailand boasts the shortest section. According to Thailand’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vijavat Isarabhakdi, the Thai segment of the highway is already in an advanced stage of completion. On the other hand, Myanmar’s Commerce Minister, Aung Naing Oo, is optimistic that the Myanmar portion will be ready within the next three years.

The completion date of this extraordinary Kolkata to Bangkok Trilateral Highway is pegged at 2027, although the timeline heavily depends on the progress made in the Indian and Myanmar sections.

Beyond the Road

This highway promises not only enhanced connectivity between two vibrant cities but also opens up the possibility of an unforgettable road trip experience. The cities en route, such as Guwahati and Yangon, are renowned for their rich history and vibrant culture, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in their unique stories. Moreover, the journey offers breathtaking vistas and diverse terrains, making this international road trip an adventure worth savoring.
