After celebrating 9 days of Ashwin month’s Navratri( as per hindu calendar), in various parts of India celebrate the festival for different reasons with different rituals establishing one fact that divinity, light and truth is supreme.It establishes our faith in the fact that evil cannot win no matter how strong it is Vijayadashami is the time for spiritual awareness.It marks the end of Durga Puja and remember the goddess Durga’s victory over Danav Mahishasura to restore and protect universe as well as remembers Shriram’s victory over Ravan.
Rituals during Vijayadashmi-
In Dussehra, devotees of Maa durga and shriram perform several rituals.Main are –
- Shami puja ( A special tree is worshipped this day to fulfill one’s wishes)
- Aparajita puja ( remember and worship the divinity to stay Aparajit that is undefeated)
- Shashtra pooja ( worshipping weapons)
Celebration during Vijayadashmi-
Ravan dahan:-
In various places in India, symbolically Ravana effigies are burned to signify the victory destruction of evil.At some places effigies of Ravan’s son Meghanada and brother Kumbhakaran are also set on fire. People participate in the event and enjoy it.
During Vijaydashmi special events,Pooja, Dandiya, Garba etc are held in temples or in big Pandals. Ramleela; must to mention Dussehra followed by navratri is not completed without mentioning Ramleela that is organising a theatrical enactment of life stories of Bhagwan Shriram.
In West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha at the end of Durga Puja, people celebrate this festival
by singing and dancing folk songs, immerse the idols of Goddess Durga in water bodies.
