Karnataka Govt Warns Pvt Hospitals of Stringent Action Over Holding Back Bodies for Unpaid Bills

After the death of a patient from Corona in Karnataka, the license of private hospitals that prevent dead bodies can be revoked until the bills are paid by the relatives. The government has ordered strict action against such hospitals. Additional Chief Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department Javed Akhtar has also issued an order in this regard.

According to the order, the government has taken seriously the incidents in which hospitals kept the bodies of those who died from Corona until the family paid the bills.

The official said that under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act (KPME), 2007, no hospital can refuse to hand over the body of the deceased to relatives after his death. On such incidents, the Deputy Commissioners of the districts have been directed to cancel the licenses of such hospitals under KPME Act-2007 and take appropriate action against them.
