July 8th, 2022: The former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died in hospital after being shot during a campaign event.
Mr. Abe was shot twice while delivering a speech on Friday morning in Nara, a city in southern Japan. The attack occurred while he was making a stump speech at a road junction in Nara for a political candidate.
After collapsing, he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. In the minutes following the attack, Mr. Abe appeared conscious and responsive, but his condition later deteriorated, and he needed a blood transfusion in hospital.
A 41-year-old suspect was taken into custody by police after security officials tackled the gunman. Tetsuya Yamagami, a Nara resident, has been identified as the suspect. He is believed to be a former member of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, which is equivalent to the navy in Japan.
