Queen Camilla is one of the hottest topics after Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee message. Queen Elizabeth called for the Duchess of Cornwall to be named Queen consort when Charles become king.
When Prince Charles and Camilla married in 2005, it was announced that she will be known as “princess consort”. This is in honor of Charles’ first wife Princess Diana who reserved the title “queen consort”. This announcement changed it all as Queen Elizabeth believes that the public has accepted Camilla.
“I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me,” the Queen said.
“And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
The Duchess of Cornwall was famous for being the third party during Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage. Princess Dianna said during an interview, “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded”. The public showed their overwhelming support for the princess after waves of leaked calls were shared.
When Princess Diana died in an accident in 1997, the public mourned and honored her life. She even kept the princess title even after the divorce. The mass knows her as the People’s Princess. It has been hard for the monarchy to move forward. Even when Charles began publicly dating Camilla, he received backlash. The Queen herself did not attend their wedding.
The monarchy seems to pass that as the Queen believes that these are all in the past now. Everybody has moved on and so must they. This shows that their institution is ready to accept change.
On Saturday, Prince Charles and Camilla announced they were “touched and honored by Her Majesty’s words” according to a spokesperson.
