Wellness and sustainability have had a growing audience over the past few years. More people are increasingly aware of the importance of these two. Let’s take a look at the growing trends this year.
Wellness
Wellness is usually associated with spas and massage centers. Now it has a broader spectacle as it also explores mental and social wellness. Many have come to realize the importance of keeping a balanced lifestyle. There are more fitness and yoga promoters now than at any point in history. Why is wellness a thing now?
The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. They currently recognize six dimensions of wellness including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental. Physical is achieved by eating healthy foods, some recommend organic. Mental and emotional can be achieved by meditation or self-reflection. Spiritual is through religion or their personal faith. Social and environmental is by surrounding yourself with the right group.
People adopt attitudes and lifestyles that prevent disease, improve health, and enhance their quality of life and sense of wellbeing. In other words, wellness is proactive, preventive, and driven by self-responsibility. The growth of wellness is the extension of this consumer value and worldview.
Sustainability
Sustainability on the other hand is to look for ways to ensure that the future generations have enough supply to survive. An interesting fact is that 50 years from now, we would need an equivalent of three earths to feed the population. The population estimated should we continue our current reproduction rate. This is the fear of many, not just environmentalists. There might not be earth for the future.
We are facing a lot of issues on the planet including global warming, overpopulation, and shortage. It is feared that we could face extinction should we not stop. Many governments are looking to shift towards the use of clean energy. Businesses are also trying to incorporate recycling. They are also trying to minimize the use of raw materials in production. Many countries are joining the green movement. Even citizens begin to explore green options.
Although both wellness and sustainability are very important, it must be reminded that we should not exploit them for any type of profit. It is a real problem we are facing where we actually have a rare chance to correct it.
