Severe Turbulence on Singapore Airlines Flight: 1 Dead, 71 Injured, Emergency Landing in Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand – A Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuring 71 others. The Boeing 777-300ER, operating as flight SQ321, was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok after the turbulence threw passengers and crew around the cabin.

The incident occurred about 10 hours into the flight, midway through meal service, while the aircraft was flying over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin. According to the airline, the turbulence struck suddenly, causing chaos within the cabin as unbelted passengers and unsecured items were violently tossed about.

A passenger traveling to New Zealand for business, described the flight as “perfectly normal” until the seatbelt sign was illuminated. “Seconds later, all hell broke loose,” he said, emphasizing the abruptness and intensity of the turbulence.

The plane landed safely at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where emergency services were on standby. Medical teams promptly attended to the injured, with some passengers requiring hospitalization for their injuries. Despite the swift medical response, one passenger succumbed to their injuries.

Singapore Airlines expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased passenger. The airline is providing support to all affected passengers and crew members. A comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the cause of the turbulence and to assess safety protocols.

Passengers described a scene of panic and disarray. “People were screaming, and luggage was flying everywhere,” one passenger recalled. Despite the chaos, the flight crew’s response has been commended for their professionalism and quick action during the emergency.

This tragic event highlights the unpredictable nature of air travel and underscores the importance of following safety protocols, such as keeping seat belts fastened when seated.

Singapore Airlines is cooperating fully with aviation authorities to ensure a thorough review of the incident. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
