StarDream Cruises Selects Thailand’s Laem Chabang as New Home Port

In a landmark moment for Thai tourism, the Star Voyager cruise ship officially launched on 22 April from Laem Chabang Port, with Thailand as its home port for the first time. The initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and StarDream Cruises, setting the stage for Thailand to play a central role in Southeast Asia’s growing cruise tourism industry. This strategic shift is set to elevate Thailand’s role in regional cruising while opening new opportunities for tourism growth, international arrivals, and premium travel experiences.

A New Hub for Luxury Cruise Tourism in Southeast Asia

The decision by StarDream Cruises is already reshaping cruise itineraries across Asia, with routes now seamlessly connecting Singapore, Koh Samui, and other tropical gems, all anchored by Laem Chabang. With more cruise travelers looking for immersive, multi-stop vacations, Thailand’s rise as a home port—not just a stopover—is being lauded by tourism professionals and travel economists.

According to Michael Goh, President of StarDream Cruises, Thailand’s dual strengths—a robust domestic tourism base and global traveler appeal—made it the perfect candidate for home port status. They see Thailand not just as a destination, but as the beating heart of Southeast Asian cruise travel.

Launch of the Star Voyager & Expanded Itineraries

Fresh from a $50 million (1.6 billion baht) refurbishment, the Star Voyager has begun operations out of Laem Chabang. The vessel, with a capacity of around 2,000 passengers, will offer regular routes including Singapore and Koh Samui, with the next voyage departing on May 7, 2025.

The cruise line aims to attract a passenger mix of 40–50% Thai nationals, complemented by travelers from China, India, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong, showcasing its ambition to cater to both local and international markets.

Cultural Showcase – “5 Must Do in Thailand”

More than just a luxury cruise, Star Voyager offers a floating celebration of Thai culture. Guests enjoy curated experiences aligned with TAT’s “5 Must Do in Thailand” campaign:

  • Must Taste – Thai cuisine highlights

  • Must Try – Hands-on cultural crafts like Bo Sang umbrella painting

  • Must Buy – Local souvenirs onboard

  • Must Seek – Spiritual and scenic destinations

  • Must See – Live Thai performances, including classical dance and cabaret shows

These activities aim to deepen the connection between visitors and the Kingdom, creating lasting impressions and inspiring future travel to Thailand.

Grand Welcome at Laem Chabang Port

To celebrate the inaugural sailing, a festive event was held at Laem Chabang Port. Highlights included a traditional Thai long-drum parade and a dazzling performance by Pattaya’s famed Alcazar Cabaret Show. All guests received exclusive Thai souvenirs to commemorate the occasion, reinforcing the warm hospitality Thailand is known for.

Opportunities for the MICE and Multi-Gen Travel Market

StarDream Cruises is also tapping into the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) segment. With onboard capacity to host up to 2,500 corporate travelers, cruises are becoming the new frontier for luxury business retreats, combining productivity with leisure.

Modern cruise ships now cater to multi-generational travelers with versatile experiences—from family-friendly amenities to wellness spas and fine dining—making them ideal for all-in-one vacations.

Cruise Tourism on the Rise in Thailand

Despite global economic uncertainties, industry experts remain optimistic. The cruise market has proven resilient, with travelers favoring all-inclusive, secure, and convenient options. In 2024, Thailand welcomed 162 cruise ships, 379,000 passengers, and 163,000 crew, generating 1.89 billion baht in tourism revenue.

Top source markets included:

  • Singapore (21.8% of cruise visitors)

  • United Kingdom (14.6%)

  • Malaysia (11.7%)

With Laem Chabang as a home port, Thailand is poised to capture even greater market share in the booming Asian cruise economy.

Thailand’s top cruise ports include:

  • Patong Bay (Phuket)

  • Laem Chabang (Chonburi)

  • Ko Samui (Surat Thani)

  • Phuket Deep Sea Port

  • Sriracha Port

Cruise travelers tend to spend more and stay longer, particularly when embarking or disembarking—a trend that bodes well for hotels, restaurants, local tours, and shopping centers.

Key Takeaways for Travel Industry Stakeholders

Travel agents, tour operators, and hospitality providers can capitalize on this cruise renaissance by:

  • Creating cruise-and-stay packages for Laem Chabang, Pattaya, and Bangkok

  • Collaborating with StarDream Cruises on shore excursions and cultural tours

  • Targeting the luxury and MICE segments with specialized offerings

The shift also encourages intermodal travel—blending cruise voyages with air and rail travel for deeper regional exploration.

Thailand at the Helm of Southeast Asia’s Cruise Future

With StarDream Cruises anchoring operations in Laem Chabang, Thailand emerges as a leading force in Southeast Asia’s maritime tourism revival. This move not only redefines cruise travel logistics but also sets the stage for enhanced regional cooperation, port development, and tourism diversification.

For travelers and tourism professionals alike, the message is clear: Southeast Asia is cruising into the spotlight—and Thailand is leading the way.
