U.K. to Hold National Election on July 4, Announces Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

The U.K. will go to the polls on July 4 to elect a new parliament, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on May 22. This election could potentially end a 14-year run of Conservative government that has seen five different Prime Ministers.

Buoyed by news of inflation hitting a three-year low, Mr. Sunak delivered his announcement in the pouring rain outside No. 10 Downing Street, turning the moment into an impromptu campaign speech. “I came to office, above all, to restore economic stability,” Mr. Sunak stated, highlighting recent positive inflation numbers and GDP growth figures. “This is proof that the plan and priorities I set out are working,” he added.

The 44-year-old former banker of Indian descent framed Britain’s electoral choices and the global context in stark terms: continuing with the current progress or facing a future without a clear plan. Sunak’s message was clear: the upcoming election is a critical decision point for the nation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining economic stability and growth.

The election announcement marks the beginning of a significant political campaign period, as parties prepare to contest for control of the government amidst a backdrop of economic recovery and global uncertainty.
