Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock
Will Smith slaps Chris Rock over a “GI-Jane II” joke during the Oscars 2022. Initially, everybody thought it was scripted or part of the presentation. However, when Smith responded “Keep my wife’s name out of your f-ing mouth”, everybody was stunned. There was a moment of unknown pause as it dawned that it really just happened.
Chris Rock was scheduled to present the Best Documentary award for the Oscars 2022. Jada became a part of his joke as “GI-Jane” due to her closely cropped hair. Pinkett Smith has spoken in the past about her battle with alopecia. Her husband thought it was an insensitive thing to say and walked to the stage to slap Chris Rock.
Chris Rock was stunned after the slap saying Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me.” At this stage, the rest of the audience was still laughing as they thought it was part of a joke. When Will Smith responded, Chris Rock simply said “Wow, dude,” replied Rock “It was a G.I. Jane joke.”
Moving on with Love
Chris presented the Best Documentary prize to Summer of Soul director Questlove. When Sean “Diddy” Combs came to honor the 50th Anniversary of The Godfather, he addressed the incident. “I didn’t know that this year was going to be the most exciting Oscars ever!” he said. “Okay, Will, Chris—we’re going to solve that like family. But right now, we’re moving on with love.”
There are reports by Vanity Fair that Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry joined the Smiths in a conversation. The details of the talk are unavailable however the couple joined hands until the end of the show.
Sorry to the Academy
In his acceptance speech, Will Smith apologized to the Academy but not to Chris Rock.
“I know to do what we do, you’ve got to be able to take abuse,” he said. “You’ve got to be able to have people disrespecting you, and you’ve got to smile and you’ve got to pretend like that’s okay.… I look like the crazy father, just like they said.… Love will make you do crazy things.”
He continued, apologizing to the Academy and to his fellow nominees. “I hope the Academy invites me back,” Smith added.
