Thailand has officially chosen its Oscar contender for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The National Federation of Thai Film Associations announced that the heartwarming drama How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, directed by Pat Boonnitipat, will represent the country.
The film, co-written by Boonnitipat and Thodsapon ‘Ped’ Thiptinnakorn, has captured the hearts of audiences both locally and internationally. Featuring Thai pop singer-turned-actor Putthipong Assaratanakul, also known as Billkin, in the lead role, the story follows a young man who quits his job to care for his ailing grandmother, with hopes of inheriting her fortune. The film masterfully blends humor with emotional depth, resonating with viewers of all ages.
Since its release, How to Make Millions has smashed box office records across Southeast Asia, earning $34 million in the region and nearing the $50 million mark globally after successful releases in the U.S. and China. Produced by GDH, one of Thailand’s top film studios, the movie has become a cultural phenomenon, drawing intergenerational audiences to theaters—a rare sight in today’s digital age.
This marks Thailand’s latest bid for international recognition at the Oscars, having submitted films in the Best International Feature category since 1994, though the country has yet to secure a nomination. The shortlist for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced on December 17, with the official nominations following on January 17. The winners will be revealed on March 2, 2025.
Could this be the year Thailand finally makes its mark at the Oscars? Fans are eagerly waiting.
