Thailand Prepares Global Tribute to King Ananda Mahidol’s 100th Anniversary

Thailand is set to honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII, with a series of nationwide and international commemorations. With royal permission granted, the ceremonies and cultural programs will take place from September 20–27, 2025, centered at Wat Suthat Thepphawararam in Bangkok and extending across provincial halls, public institutions, and Thai embassies around the world.

A Week of National Commemoration

The commemorative events begin with an inaugural ceremony and press conference on August 28, 2025, at Wat Suthat. Senior government officials will lead the sacred invocation at the Royal Monument of King Ananda Mahidol, officially announcing the program to the nation.

On September 20, Buddhist prayer and alms-offering ceremonies will be held at Wat Suthat, throughout Thailand’s provinces, and at Thai diplomatic missions overseas. Later that day, prayer services will be conducted in the temple’s main chapel, followed by wreath-laying ceremonies at key monuments in remembrance of the late monarch.

Cultural Programs and Exhibitions at Wat Suthat

From September 20–27, Wat Suthat will transform into the heart of the centennial celebration with:

  • Exhibitions on King Ananda Mahidol’s life and legacy

  • Cultural performances and traditional homage rituals

  • A breathtaking “Garden of Light” installation

  • Night museum programs showcasing historical artifacts

  • A community marketplace highlighting Thai craftsmanship and heritage

Commemorative Coins, Stamps, and Volunteer Projects

Throughout September, the government will release special edition coins, medals, and postage stamps honoring the centenary. Across the country, royal altars and portraits of King Ananda Mahidol will be displayed in public offices and community spaces. Volunteer service projects—both in Thailand and abroad—will further symbolize the collective respect and gratitude of the Thai people.

Honoring a King Remembered Globally

The Prime Minister’s Office will also publish a special commemorative volume written by Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana. The book reflects on the early lives of King Ananda Mahidol and his younger brother, King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, while offering rare insights into Thailand’s international relations during their reigns.

Why This Centenary Matters

King Ananda Mahidol, remembered as Rama VIII, remains an important figure in Thailand’s modern history. Though his reign was brief, his legacy continues to resonate as part of the nation’s collective memory. The centenary events not only honor his life but also connect Thais and friends of Thailand worldwide through cultural exchange, remembrance, and unity.
