Bangkok, Thailand – Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has rushed to contain a major road collapse on Samsen Road in front of Vajira Hospital, deploying 50,000 sandbags—equivalent to 500 cubic meters—to stabilize the affected area.
While the sandbags have helped secure the site, officials noted that damaged steel structures from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority are still obstructing a full seal. Engineering teams are now preparing reinforced concrete work as the next step to strengthen the ground and prevent further subsidence.
Critical Zone at Samsen Police Station
The most dangerous section is located beneath Samsen Police Station, where damaged building piles risk collapse. Authorities have evacuated around 50 police officers and 20 nearby households for safety. In addition, heavy trucks have been banned from Sukothai Road, and officials are considering a temporary road closure to reduce vibrations from large vehicles.
Vajira Hospital Status
Vajira Hospital confirmed that all buildings remain structurally safe. However, outpatient services (OPD) are suspended for 1–2 days due to traffic congestion and safety risks. Emergency care, surgeries, and inpatient treatment continue as normal.
Relief Measures for Residents
The BMA has also implemented water and drainage management to reduce underground water levels and prevent rainwater inflow. Temporary shelters have been arranged, and rescue teams are conducting inspections to assist affected residents, particularly the elderly and bedridden patients.
Governor’s Statement
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stressed that sandbags are the most effective emergency measure, noting their flexibility in filling underground voids without disrupting future tunnel operations.
In a message posted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration on Facebook, firefighters and rescue personnel reaffirmed their commitment:
“No matter what disaster Bangkok may face, please have confidence that we — the firefighters and rescue teams of Bangkok — are ready to fight every danger with full strength. We will prevent, contain, and stop hazards to protect lives and property.”
