Bangkok, Thailand – The Embassy of India in Bangkok, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), hosted a solemn and inspiring ceremony at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) to mark the International Day of Non-Violence on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Cultural Tribute Led by SVCC Bangkok

The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), Embassy of India in Bangkok, presented soulful musical performances to honor Gandhi’s enduring legacy. Renowned Thai singer, actress, and songwriter Ms. Ann Mitchai, along with talented students of the Modern International School Bangkok (MISB), performed devotional songs that captivated the audience and created a spirit of reflection and harmony.

Dignitaries and Floral Tributes

The ceremony was graced by Ms. Armida S. Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, and Mr. Phuchphop Mongkolnavin, Deputy Director General at Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and the Indian diaspora in Thailand also joined the gathering.

As part of the tribute, dignitaries and participants paid floral respects at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi, symbolizing unity and collective commitment to his universal values.

Messages of Peace and Non-Violence

Ambassador Nagesh Singh of India in Thailand, along with other distinguished speakers, emphasized the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy in addressing today’s global challenges. “Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless principles of truth, peace, and non-violence continue to guide humanity in these testing times,” Ambassador Singh noted.

Executive Secretary Armida S. Alisjahbana read a special message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who underscored the importance of Gandhian ideals in promoting dialogue, harmony, and peaceful coexistence worldwide.

A Global Call for Unity

The commemoration not only celebrated Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary but also reinforced the shared responsibility of nations and communities to uphold his message. Through cultural performances, tributes, and reflections, the event in Bangkok highlighted the universal appeal of Gandhi’s vision—a vision that continues to inspire movements for justice, equality, and peace across the globe.
