Bangkok, Thailand — In a powerful push toward better public health, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) launched the “Run Around the City: Healthy City – Good Health Starts Here” campaign this morning at Klang Hospital, uniting hundreds of residents, health officials, and fitness enthusiasts for a mission to get the city moving.
The event began before dawn, with Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt leading the run alongside Mr. Wiput Sriwawurai, President of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council; Mr. Wisanu Subsompon and Assoc. Prof. Tavida Kamolvej, Deputy Governors; and Dr. Lertlak Leelaruengsang, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the BMA. Executives and staff from the Medical Services Department, Klang Hospital, and nearby district offices — Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Samphanthawong, and Bang Rak — also joined the event.
Fighting Bangkok’s Silent Health Threats
The campaign comes in response to recent data from the BMA’s free health screening program, which has provided check-ups to over one million residents. The results revealed worrying trends — overweight and high cholesterol are now the top two health risks across all districts, while diabetes ranks among the Top 5.
In light of these findings, the BMA has intensified efforts to promote its “Healthy City” initiative, part of the “9 Aspects of Wellbeing” strategy. This policy aims to reduce non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and high blood lipid levels, which have become major health concerns among Bangkokians.
Bringing Communities Together Through Running
The “Run Around the City” series transforms Bangkok’s neighborhoods into fitness zones, offering free runs across multiple districts. Participants can choose from 3 km, 5 km, or 10 km distances, making the event accessible to all ages and fitness levels. Those who complete their chosen route receive a commemorative medal as a symbol of commitment to good health.
The campaign aims to foster awareness and create lasting habits among citizens while providing an opportunity to connect with fellow health-minded individuals.
Upcoming Runs in October
Residents who missed today’s event still have several chances to join the movement. Upcoming runs include:
-
October 12, 2025 – Rama VIII Bridge, Bang Phlat District
-
October 19, 2025 – Maitrijit Lake, Khlong Sam Wa District
-
October 26, 2025 – Siam Park, Khan Na Yao District
Each run is designed to motivate Bangkokians to “run away from fat” and take charge of their own wellbeing.
