Travelling Around Thailand This Weekend? Expect Heavy Rain in Many Areas

If you’re living in or traveling around Thailand this weekend, expect wet weather ahead. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning that Typhoon Kalmaegi, currently moving across the South China Sea toward Vietnam, will bring heavy rainfall to many parts of Thailand from Friday through Sunday (November 7–9).

What to Expect

While the storm will weaken as it moves inland, the system’s moisture is expected to fuel widespread rain across the country—especially in the lower Northeast, lower Central, Eastern, and Southern regions. Occasional heavy downpours could cause localized flooding and travel delays, so it’s best to plan ahead if you’re heading out for weekend trips or outdoor activities.

Areas to Watch

The eastern provinces along the Gulf of Thailand and the southern coastal areas are likely to see the heaviest rainfall. Travelers in beach destinations such as Pattaya, Rayong, Hua Hin, Surat Thani, and Phuket should stay updated on local weather reports and avoid swimming or boating in rough seas.

Government Preparations

Thailand’s Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has confirmed that major dams and reservoirs are being closely managed to prevent flooding downstream. The Bhumibol Dam in Tak province is increasing water discharge to handle incoming rainfall, while the Chao Phraya Dam continues to regulate river flow in the central plains.

Travel and Safety Tips

  • Keep an umbrella or rain jacket handy—short bursts of intense rain are likely.

  • Check local advisories and Thai Meteorological Department updates before traveling.

  • Avoid driving through flooded areas and be cautious on slippery roads.

  • For those living in low-lying neighborhoods, prepare for potential water runoff or flash flooding.

Thailand’s reservoirs are currently at about 88% capacity, and while authorities say the situation is under control, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to stay alert and prioritize safety this weekend.
