Thailand is gearing up for one of its busiest travel periods of the year, as the Songkran holiday drives a sharp increase in both domestic and international movement across the country.
According to projections from Airports of Thailand, approximately 3.7 million passengers are expected to pass through six key airports between April 10 and 19, marking a steady rise compared to last year.
Strong Growth in Domestic Travel
The data highlights a notable rebound in local tourism, with domestic passenger traffic forecast to reach 1.44 million, reflecting strong demand for interprovincial travel during the Thai New Year celebrations.
Meanwhile, international travel remains dominant, with an estimated 2.26 million passengers, reinforcing Thailand’s position as a top holiday destination in Southeast Asia during Songkran.
In total, airlines are expected to operate more than 23,000 flights over the holiday period, including both domestic and international routes.
Major Airports Prepare for High Traffic
The surge will be spread across six of Thailand’s busiest aviation hubs:
- Suvarnabhumi Airport
- Don Mueang International Airport
- Chiang Mai International Airport
- Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport
- Phuket International Airport
- Hat Yai International Airport
To help manage congestion, authorities are introducing free parking at selected airports, along with shuttle bus services connecting terminals and parking zones.
Enhanced Airport Services and Technology
Passengers can expect smoother airport experiences thanks to a range of upgraded facilities and support systems, including:
- Additional baggage carts and passenger amenities
- Expanded self-check-in and bag drop services
- Implementation of biometric identification systems
- Multilingual assistance at major terminals
- Dedicated support for elderly travelers and passengers with special needs
Airports are also increasing staffing levels and coordinating closely with immigration and transport agencies to streamline passenger flow and reduce waiting times.
24/7 Assistance and Heightened Security
To ensure safe and efficient travel, passenger assistance centers will operate around the clock, while enhanced security and screening procedures are in place across all major hubs.
Authorities emphasize that these measures are designed to maintain both convenience and safety during one of the country’s most active travel windows.
Nationwide Safety Campaign Launched
Beyond airports, Thailand is rolling out a broader safety initiative for the holiday period. The “Songkran Safe and Care” campaign, led by the Department of Provincial Administration, focuses on improving safety standards across tourist areas.
The campaign involves coordination with key agencies, including:
- Royal Thai Police
- Immigration Bureau
- Tourist Police Bureau
- Bangkok Metropolitan Administration
Inspections are being carried out at hotels, entertainment venues, and popular tourist districts to ensure compliance with safety regulations and readiness for increased visitor numbers.
Focus on Bangkok’s Key Tourist Zones
In Bangkok, authorities are paying special attention to high-traffic areas such as:
- Khao San Road
- Siam
- Silom
- Asok
- RCA
Officials will continue monitoring these locations throughout the holiday to maintain order, enhance public safety, and boost traveler confidence.
