University of Hyderabad (INDIA) Leads Quest for Climate-Proof Super Grain

India Updates

As climate change poses an escalating threat to global food security, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) is spearheading a pioneering effort to develop climate-resilient super grains. At the heart of this initiative is The Millet Lab, established in 2020 under the guidance of Dr. Mehanathan Muthamilarasan, where scientists are reimagining ancient millet crops to withstand a warming world.

Innovating at The Millet Lab

On a one-acre experimental farm nestled within the UoH campus, researchers cultivate foxtail, kodo, and other millet varieties. Combining traditional fieldwork with advanced genomics, the team is decoding the genetic makeup of these hardy grains. A recent breakthrough has identified over 500 genes in foxtail millet that could enhance staple crops like rice against extreme heat and environmental stress. Supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), the lab has also pinpointed a stress-associated protein gene, a potential game-changer for heat-tolerant agriculture.

“We cultivate and study these millets to adapt them for future climates,” said researcher Pooja Shukla, highlighting the project’s hands-on approach. The team has amassed over 300 diverse germplasms from ICRISAT and the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), fueling cutting-edge studies aimed at genetic engineering solutions.

Beyond the lab, UoH fosters public engagement through Millet-Utopia, an annual event that drew nearly 1,400 school students in 2025 for millet-themed activities and farm visits. Dr. Muthamilarasan noted, “It’s inspiring to see young minds embrace this cause.” The university also welcomed its largest cohort of student interns this year, signaling a growing commitment to training the next generation of researchers in food security and climate resilience.

A Vision for Sustainable Agriculture

This initiative positions UoH as a leader in sustainable agriculture, offering hope for a food-secure future amid climate challenges.
